I’m looking for a device that will detect power and pipes underground. We’re installing more and more posts in to ground and after a 3′ miss on a power line a while back we need to have a safe way to ensure there are no power lines or pipes where we need to dig. The job where we were close to the line the customer had a device that picked these up and looking on line I can only find ones that detect power cables but not pipes.

What do others use and can you recommend one?

    Thanks

we bought one about 8-9 years ago now, best thing we did Warren, I wouldn’t dig a hole now without one! it is amazing the amount of underground works you would never dream being there, is!
like you, we have had a couple of close calls… one is all it takes!

we paid about £500 for our ground cat scan back then, i imagine they may have come down in price a bit by now. we did contract work for a hire company all over the uk, so always were given one to use on site for free. soon as that work stopped, we bought our own.

make sure they go through the ins and outs of using it though. doesnt take long but worth knowing what your doing as it can be confusing and there is a proper method of use.

for pipes i believe they use a transmitter to induce a signal in to the ground which then radiates along the pipe and is picked up with the receiver. If you are going to use this type of equipment check your insurance and you may find that they want you to be certified it can also be costly to keep this equipment calibrated as i think it has to be done every 6 months. If you feel you really require this get certificated and hire it as & when you need it. Remember you are going to be saying that it is safe to dig in specified area if something goes wrong you will want your insurance company on your side.

For the risks involved, its probably best to sub the ground works out. The worst Ive done is hit a land drain, which made using postcrete a little tricky. If you hit a gas or water main youll know about it. Hit a power cable and it could be lights out……
