    Hi all

I have heard Jill mention a Signwriters Price Guide from the US but I was wondering if there was such a thing in the UK.

If not, how difficult would it be to incorporate one into this site.

We could have a forum just for price queries and using the information from this forum we could build a comprehensive UK price guide.

    What do you think?

    There are several here:
    http://www.stmediagroup.com/st-bin/quikstore.cgi
And SignCraft just gave one out free with their subscriptions.

    Thanks Jill

There seems to be plenty of these guides for the American sign industry but how relevent are they on this side of the pond.

I would be interesting to look at one.

Do you know if there are any online price guides.

Very cool link though Jill, I can feel my credit card sliding out of my wallet as we speak.

Marek, I just used that one yesterday.
The Signwriter’s pricing guide only had prices for sandblasted Redwood,
not HDU. The SignCraft one had it.
    (I don’t often do those)
You can also buy it here:
    https://www.signcraft.com/secure/cart/items.asp?cat=9
    But I’d subscribe.
I think EstiMate softwear also let you select the currency type.

    quote Jillbeans:

Hey my big sis is in La Mesa all this week!

Awesome, what brings her to town? She’s getting some pretty good weather right now. A little overcast at the beaches, but anywhere inland is really nice. Does she have kids with her? She should come check out the park. I’ll get her some tickets if needed. Let me know.

SignCraft is definately a great magazine to subscribe to. It has such great articles written by the best of the best. Lots of pictures too. 😀

    Sorry for the highjacking Paul….
Marek she’s 10 years older than me with grown kids,
    but thanks just the same.
She went out to visit my aunt Roselia in Lemon Grove (I think)
We used to drive out there every other summer.
Sometimes it was 6 kids in 1 car, my poor parents.
I haven’t been there since before you were born,
but any Welshes or Jungers you meet out that way are surely related to me.

i mentioned this a while ago, but the UK sign industry seems wary about releasing pricing information!? would be a good addition to the site, perhaps some sample jobs, from a-boards to vans with a breakdown of the costs, could be done like a poll and people could submit what they would charge this would give a mean value and something to work from.

Sounds like a good idea, but price guides are just that, guides!
How much do you charge for a pound of spuds? the answer, if you ask the big supermarkets is, Buy as cheap as you can. and sell for as much as you can get! Keep an eye on what the comp is charging, that is a good a guide as any. Get your friends to phone other sign companies for quotes, and you will soon get a feel for your local market.

thank you paul, much appreciated mate.

lynn your pretty much on the ball there, there isnt any structure that will tell you what to sell at. not only do we personally want to get as much as possible but all over the uk the price of living varies. same products sold in different areas will vary. e.g. glasgow a transit van with average amount of text, £180 london = £260 etc

what i think would be best is a few examples of different materials, signs, etc giving options on how to calculate what the job is worth. from there it is upto you what price you are multiplying etc, hope that made sense? but… at the same time it would be good for someone from various locations to price a job, the exact same job and tell us how they got there. then we publish this on the site. again, this will not be a public forum for just anyone to see, would be gold access and higher at least, i think?

anyone else with any ideas on how this can come about im all ears and will do my best to make it happen.

Price Guides are a good thing.
I find that when I open mine in front of a client,
they are more ready to give me the listed price.
Usually it is a lot more than I normally charge,
so if I quote a bit lower they think they are getting a bargain.
    I am too.
    It’s a win/win situation.
    Unified pricing helps us all.

The New Zealand Sign Industry Pricing Guide was released here about a year ago by the New Zealand Sign and Display Association. Its based on average prices across the country. You made a great point Jill unified pricing has to be good for all of us. If anyone wants a copy contact Brian Fairchild the secretary of the NZSDA via the website http://www.signs.org.nz. A lot of customers we have in are after a ballpark price, the guide is great for this as most of the pricing is on the high side compared to what we would do the work for.

also the price guide that comes with the SignCraft subscription has 3 different prices for each “sign” quoted. It all depends on your hourly shop rate (which it helps you figure out as well).

I think this pricing guide could be a good thing for getting over customer objections as it’s there in black and white in front of them, BUT you’ll still get the eejits with a cutter and corel 5 cutting arial for 2 sides of a van for 40 or fifty quid.
Years ago we used to price everything by the square ft. lightboxes, foamex signs etc. then have aditional charge for each additional colour.
You can make your pricing as simple or as difficult as you like.
    Cheers
    Joe
