  • Trying to locate material that sticks to leather?

Posted by Matt Boyd on October 2, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Hey guys/girls, had a client who wants a simple racing style "R" that will stick onto the headrest of his car. now, I’ve never been asked if i have anything that will stick onto leather before. may sound like a dumb question but….will a high quality cast do the job? or do i need a specialist material? maybe it can’t be done and you need a leather piece to sew onto the headrest? by the sounds of it he has some sticker on their already and its starting to peel on one edge.

I think it needs pressing though.

i would just play as safe as possible, you will only get one chance to get this right or expensive cockup.

BUT, thinking hard back books and gold leaf, that is applied with heat press and gold leaf. Apart from straight forward vinyl route and considering wear and tear, then I would just do simple vinyl or ‘no we cant do it’

    Tried Arlon DPF 8000?

I’ve had that stick to nearly everything I’ve tried.

We call it the super sticky stuff.

Siser has a transfer material that you can use for leather, we’ve done some guitar straps using it. You’ll need to be able to fit it into a transferpress though.

    Mask and paint maybe?

Try Avery Signflex Curtain film, its flexible and sticks well. We did some wheel covers.. sure they where leather, had to wipe down with thinners to soften, apply and let sit for a bit and it will bite in.

    Hi

Instead of using a vinyl, could you cut a ‘mask’ in vinyl (letter removed) and paint or roll ink directly onto the headrest to achieve this?

Use a flexible ink from one of the screen-print suppliers.

    Cheers

As a ‘try it and see’ option which would be pennies in cost (and minimal risk to the leather, I would have thought) how about banner vinyl, then heated on with your heat gun, to ensure adhesion into the creases?
