    Hi

been getting annoyed with spam email (aim.com) recently so decided to do something about it. Not ever having worried about viruses, spam, spyware etc before I have no security in place.
So my bright idea was to download free AVG anti virus, spyware thingy which I researched was a good product.
AVG 90% downloaded but didn’t have a control panel screen for some reason.. it started to scan my pc and I had no way to stop it, AVG found a virus I knew I had which always sat there doing nothing, it proceeded to ‘repair’ it, taking out all my ‘.exe’ files in the process…….
Could not uninstall AVG or return my pc to previous OK condition, have now got it limping along.

So…. Am thinking of re-installing XP pro again and starting fresh, thing is PC came from EBay with no XP disk, it has however got an XP sticker on side.

Question really is, how do I reinstall XP without original disk, can I download using serial number on side or do I have to try find seller of PC (difficult cos I’ve lost stuff which came with purchase)? Maybe better to buy another XP pro disc since I’m getting another PC soon.

AVG has got a control panel (I’ve been a long time AVG user)
Look at the bar by your clock, there should be an icon that’s made of 4 colour boxes.

And when you do a scan, you should be able to stop it… and also tell it to ignore anything it finds.

    Maybe it didn’t install right?

As for the fresh install, you would need to buy an OEM (as it’s cheaper) copy, or find someone who has a copy, and borrow the CD.

Then as long as it’s not a DELL machine, you can use the serial number on the box.

    Thanks Joseph

Yes it did not install correctly, trying to open through programs or with that little button brought up an error message.

Most is working Ok-ish at moment, had to re-install a lot of stuff, signlab 5 is causing problems cause it’s an old disk and I’ve long since lost the serial number… might download roland cutstudio as temporary way to cut from Corel x4 reasonably.

    Thanks again

Oh, I did re-install AVG and it worked second time, could then stop it continually finding my ‘resident virus’ and knocking out my access to programs all the time.

Ian, what make and model is the machine? If you have an XP licence on the side of the machine you should be able to get a set of discs from the manufacturer or from some of the high street outlets if it is a machine that they have previously sold in their shops and then use the same licence key when you reinstal the original software.

Reinstall is easy you can download it from the net and a serial number to. But if you using it in your office is better to buy a cd with serial i know you got the sticker but maybe it is not working. First format the hdd best is to take it out put on another machine and format all partitoned disks, if there is just one disk you can keep it in the machine and format it with xp cd and dont forget to set the boot on cd sorry for my bad english, if you ready with xp install drivers thats it easy not.
