I really should’ve asked this before going installing!

We did the van attached yesterday, and after my visit to Sign and Digital earlier in the year we thought we knew enough ‘tricks’ from watching the wrapping demos to do this.

I know it’s better to trim the print on the van, that to cut it from the template.

How do you trim it neatly on the van, without damaging the paint and without it looking jagged. We didn’t do a bad job with a biro and sharp scalpel!

    Cheers in advance

    Cheers Phil,

I knew someone would show me a better way.

Only downside is we don’t install on the premises (no garage) so have to work with a little paste table!

I will try this next time – it might not be for another 12months yet!

David, buy yourself a decent fold away table so you have a good surface to work from when installing away from home. As well as Phill’s way there is also a trimming tape which you can use. Have a look at one of the roof fitting questions because it is mentioned in there. Not sure how good it would be on a tight bend though.

Alan, I’m not to good at finding old posts but if I remember correctly hexis were one company that did a tape for trimming.

It is Hexis that do the tape, although we use 3M straight line tape (cant remember part no) bought from bodyshop supplier, available in 3/6/12mm widths, great for cutting on paint and also ideal to use 3mm and 12mm together if you want to cut a straight line by using the 12 under and the 3 as a straight edge to run your knife against. So the 12mm is under and the 3mm is on top of your vinyl.(Hope that makes sense.)

Jason, that looks pretty good – have you used it? Is there an Aussie distributor?

    Cheers

This has taken me a while to figure what this stuff is, because I cannot find a description on that website Jason. 😳
Am I right it is tape imbedded with a fine wire that you pull from below the vinyl and it cuts cleanly through the vinyl?
What a great idea! I think I need to get me some of that!
Trimming is the trickiest thing about wrapping, and it gets almost zero coverage, certainly almost nothing was said about it on the course I did.

I haven’t bought it yet. Was trying to get a supplier in oz to stock it. It isn’t cheap but I wouldn’t use it for all trimming tasks.

I can see it as a benefit when you do utes and need to cut behind the cab where there is no clear line and you wrap around the body and its hard to get your knife in there. Would also be using for bonnet stripes etc where you dont want to template it and just run a pin stripe and flood coat and pull back the wire to follow the lines of the vehicle.

I know it isn’t cheap but used like this would be pretty useful.
