traditional signage: angel & royal
Hanging sign 48” x 37”, 1.5mm copper sheet, all hand painted.
Plus a smaller version (33” x 28”) for rear of hotel.
Based (loosely) on previous designs.

The signs aren’t up yet Steve, probably later this next week. I’ll take more pix when they are.
As for the copper, it makes a good substrate but it’s bloody heavy, and expensive. I would have used aluminium given the choice.
The original (well previous) signs were copper and the powers that be at the council asked that these new ones be the same, listed building, you know the sort of thing.
At the moment the signs are digital prints of the original signs (not my doing) sandwiched between clear Perspex, not a pretty site. They went up the middle of last year. Now, presumably because of complaints, we are informed they are only temporary until they could find someone to paint new ones, yes right. (?)
Time; about sixty odd hours, bear in mined there are four sides, all needing to look the same.

Great job Alan, do you know why copper. I know you have said its because they were done on copper before and the council wanted to keep it the same but do you know why the old signs were done on copper?
Is it because of the materials the building is made of, I have heard that ally reacts with certain types of material.
I’m afraid I am no good at painting so I would have gone down the digital print road. But I think I could have done a better job than was done. The print could have been done to look like it was painted and with a liquid laminate to protect it there would have been no need for the clear perspex. I think I might have been able to sort out some better artwork as well. The one you have posted looks very much like bog standard clipart. -

You have us all wondering about the copper substrate now?
What kind of primer did you use?
Was it a zinc chromate based non ferrous metal primer or just multi purpose metal primer, just curious.
