    Hi

Have a customer who wants a low maintenance sign on wall above their shop… approx 8ft x 4ft landscape.

Not a conservation area but a traditional tearoom and of course it needs to be in keeping.

Tried to convince that a trad wood sign painted proper would last years but no go.

Therefore advice please on building a sign of ali composite with a ‘architrave type border.

Sign will be against natural stone which juts out all over the place so advice on hanging it would be greatly appreciated…

Lastly considereing a fibreglass blank but don’t know where from…

    Thanks

    I’ve used Glasplas before
    http://www.glasplas.com/

They produce a range of traditional looking signblanks ideal for pubs and restaurants. In my experience – Excellent customer service.

Thank you very much Phil and Lynn… job sorted so to speak, at those prices it seems stupid of me to consider fabricating a trad look sign from ali composite and ‘something else’ to frame it.

One thing I never liked about fibreglass signs was the same colour surround and face, always looked to me a bit ‘plasticy’ so would you recommend use of paint spray or applied vinyl to change the border of the sign?

    I wouldn’t bother Ian.

The signs I have produced have been in a single self coloured GRP. To me they do not look any different from a well painted wooden sign.

i agree with phill, used glasplas a few times and the signs always looked the part.

i had to replicate some traditional signs that were made for a customer in MDF and wood. the signs looked great when they went up. i dont know who did them… but 18 months down the line and they had pulped, chipped and bits falling off.
the customer still liked the signs but wanted them to last, so asked me could i do them. i more or less copied the signs but manufactured them out of 19mm foamex, vinyl, moulded letters etc etc

you can see part of the old one next to the one i was in the process of building for them here.

it was done years ago now, still up there today looking exactly the same.
    not my cuppa-tea though :lol1:

Thinking about it I believe you’re right Phil, it’s probably my not brilliant painting that always made my new signs look a bit ‘rough’ if you see what I mean… a well painted wooden sign in one colour does indeed look uniform.
