    Hi all,

I have a customer who has given me this picture of the sort of thing he is looking for, to go above his bar, which is being refurbished currently.
It would consist of 2 qty approx 3m panels either side of the centre piece of the bar. it would have text similar to the picture, which I presumed was carved & gold leafed, but on closer inspection, I think is gold vinyl with mirror gold highlights.

I would like to be able to give him both options, as cost may be an issue.

I’m looking for advice on how it would best done, going the gold leaf route.
i.e. should it be carved (routered) out of the timber he is going to be using for the bar, or carved from say, 19mm foamex then sprayed & leafed?

He also wants it to be covered with glass/ acrylic for protection & ease of cleaning etc. With regards to that, would the glass need sealing with silicone around the edges & joins to avoid condensation & dust ingress?

Finally, does anyone have any idea of what sort of price this sort of thing goes for?

    Thanks
    Regards
    Myles

Authentic way would be carved and filled with loose leaf gold then covered with glass. A small bead of silicone along the edge and covered with the slips would help but the fact it is on the inside may mean it isn’t necessary.
Don’t see any problems doing it from foamex if that was cheaper. It can also be done by gilding onto the glass in reverse and then backing with black.
I can’t see vinyl option working in an olde world bar.

    Hi Harry,

Thanks for that, I imagine the leafing would take a good while with that amount of text, (never done it before, but keen to give it a try).

I think if you look closely at the picture, (not very clear) it appears to be vinyl? maybe I’m wrong, but I agree the trad route would be infinitely preferable, but at the end of the day cost will determine which, I feel.

Working with loose leaf is a steep learning curve Myles and would take a bit of time. I have seen the fills done with Ardenbrite Sovereign Gold which is as close to Gold leaf as I have ever seen and a quality product. A little goes a long way too as its quite expensive. http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/t/TORARDCC/

These people do a lot of that kind of work
