  • Tinted Window Film – Application queries?

    Hello All

Have been asked by a customer if I can fit some window film (he’s supplying the stuff) to a boat that he’s restoring. Reading past messages and replies, I gather that this stuff is best on the inside of the window? The problem is that in all honesty the boat is a bit of a wreck (glad I’m not going out in it!), and the window condition is worse on the inside than the outside! The owner reckons it would be better to put it on the outside, as it is easier to clean!

The question is will it work? I realise that it won’t be a work of art, but the customer understands that – he only paid £200 for the boat on ebay! Also, it is very difficult to see which side of the film is the adhesive side and which is the non adhesive outside? I’m assuming (very dangerous I know!), that it becomes easier to seperate the film from its cover once it is wet with the water/washing up liquid solution? Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

    Right….where do we start?
Tint can only be applied on the inside.
Did you say the customer supplied the tint?….if it’s cheap crap from a car accessory shop you’ll be in trouble from the word go!
Is the glass curved or flat?
If it’s curved, walk away! – Curved glass needs to be heat shrinked (the film that is) and this takes a bit of learning.
This is a job that WILL bite you in the arrse if you are not expert at tinting, so in a nutshell I’d leave it alone if I were you.
If you insist on doing the job have a look at the forums on tintdude.com which has some excellent demos etc, BUT if you post on that site put a flameproof suit on first as they don’t tale too kindly to new people asking newbie type questions.
    Good luck with it anyway.
    Cheers
    Joe
PM me if you need more help or need some professional tint film to do the job properly ( note to over zealous moderators who like editing my posts – this is not a supplier type offer – just helping out!!!)
    That’ll get deleted for sure :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

Thanks Joe. I wouldn’t worry too much about me making a mess of it, you haven’t seen the boat :lol1: I will try and make sure that I put it on the inside of the glass, though it’ll take the customer about a week to clean the paint splatters off! Sounds like the only thing I’ve got going for me is the fact none of the glass is curved!

To figure out which is the tint and which is the liner, use 2 pieces of masking tape stuck to the same corner and pull them apart with the tape pieces OR lay the film flat and use a blade to seperate the corner.
It needs to be applied wet using clean water with a few drops of johnsons baby shampoo.
You’ll make it easier on yourself if you cut a pattern of the window to use as a template or take the window out if you can.
Like I said in the other post, there’s a guide to tinting and some excellent demos on tintdude.com.
    Cheers
    Joe
