  • think i’m outgrowing my workshop !

Posted by Hugh Potter on February 20, 2006 at 1:08 pm

walked into the workshop yesterday and it suddenly struck me that i’m real short on space now !

ok.. so the immediate right hand side is taken up with a fridge, freezr, several boxes from when i moved house, and 3 lots of fishing gear, but jeez, i’m even tying mailing boxes to the roof now !! major lack of space, what you cant see, are the step ladders and tressles i put outside when i first get in !

am i alone in my overfiling of a workspace ?

yeah yeah, and Rob’s gonna tell me he started in a matchbox ! what do you mean… he did? 😀 😀 😀

like you say russ, no room for casting ! just enough room for rig making, storing (and drying) floaty suits, tackle boxed etc etc !

i do occasionally make signs though, there’s about 8ft of bench and 40sq foot of floor space dedicated to it !

    Hi Hugh

I know what you mean about out growing your workspace.

The thing is what do you do next?

My garage has been converted into my workshop – 3 printers, an array of heat presses, metal cutters, laser engraver (and extraction) vinyl cutter/plotter lots of stock etc and a pc, I have a study that serves as my office – phones, fax, 2 pc’s, 2 printers, files, manuals, etc etc etc

I now have to squeeze a Roland SP300 in my garage shortly too 😕

But I don’t want to rent a unit/shop as that will force me to put my prices up, and more importantly, I will lose the flexibility I currently have, with working hours to suit – i.e. with 4 kids about, it means I can spend time with them, and get a lot of my tedious work done in the evenings when they go to bed. At busy times I can work till 3 or 4am if I need to.

I might have to build a workshop in the garden next, or in the short term perhaps somewhere to store my stock, and free up space in the garage.

Hugh, what are you planning to do if you need more space?

I guess plenty of otheres have started this way, so when is the correct time to move into a unit? (?)

    lord only knows martin !!

we’re thinkng of gettng a smaller shed for the bikes which still reside under a tarp outside, so maybe i could hide some gear in there if allowed (somehow think i wont be though !)

i dont think my prices are a real big issue with regards to rent, in order to not be seen ‘cheap’ i try and keep my prices inline with other shops, thats not to say i wont drop a little to get a job, i guess thats the beauty of being able too, i just make more if there’s no haggling ! i think for me, its a case of getting off my bottom and bringing in more work rather than pricing,

i really need a desk in the workshop, i’ve been trying to get artwork done in here today (kitchen), but have spent half of it on here ! at least in the workshop my wireless wont reach so i get on with work !

i am thinking of a small 600ft workshop though, it wont be available for another 6 months or so, so i should have time to build up to that,

ps, hows the mma ? i’ve not renwed yet 😳 i miss some of those threads, maybe we should do the creation vs evolution thig on here !!! maybe not !

I thought the mma was a bit quiet recently 🙂

Not much going on there at the moment really, at least nothing that has a decent discussion to it 😀

Are you going to any event this year Hugh?

    Wheels Day/brooklands etc?

Yeah i know what ya mean guys. Ive actually converted an ex-“PRISON” box. That was previously used to cart off cons to and from HMP. Got a nice long bench about 3.5mtrs long by 800 width. But with the cadet also, it seems a bit of a squeeze. I converted this while i was working part-time as a coachbuilder. Still do when things are quiet. The gaffers pretty cool as i have worked there on and off for the past 14yrs. Sh@t has it been that long!!!!! Heres some pics before i removed it from the chassis, and in the middle of kitting it out. Well its damn secure makrolon windows etc. 40mm thick side walls, double chubb locks. Even escape hatches in the roof.(when i lock meself in ha ha)

Martin, i wondered how the charger was coming along ! as for pinkie, yes, sold her, minus engine trans etc etc, just the rolling shell going to iceland !! was a typo on the vin number so waiting for dvla to sort it !!

there’ll son be a box of car bits (guages, ignition etc !) to squeeze in the workshop too !!

Hugh, my ‘room’ is 7m x 5m and I’m pushed for space! How do you do it mate. I hate confined spaces anyway, so it is fair to say I couldn’t work in that space at all.

it’s easier to work in than it looks, in new speak it’s about 4mx2.4m ! not big, i have about 7ft of bench clear, big enough for most jobs, though the rest of the bench has easily moved stuff on ! all the vinyl is on the right, well… most of it is, boards are tucked away along walls (anywhere !), tape dispenser is on wall to left in paralell with bench, sorted !

i have enough room to swing a kitten ! any big boards get done outside if the weather is ok,

i really do need to get a load of the fishing gear out though, as well as the last of the move house stuff, but where to put it ?!?!

    Hey Hugh,

You’ve gone Gold too bro 😀

I used to have 36m x 14m to play with.

    Now I’m working in 6m x 6m.

    Space – The final frontier.

Well, I was short on space, then my Versacamm arrived – it is a big bit of kit for a small garage/workshop like mine!

So, on one side I have a laptop, 3xsubli printers(one above the other) metal cutters, corner rounders, a couple of mug presses, and a flatbed heat press.

On the other a vinyl cutter, laser, and now the Versacamm 😮

I have a little channel in the middle to work.

Saying that all the design work is done in my study, as the laptop in the garage is really just a print server – although useful for listening to music when I am in there.

    Space? Whats that then???

    Oh well from small acorns……..

I don’t really make anything that needs that amount of space, as I don’t do signs.

Mine is all promo stuff like clothing, awards, stickers – the small stuff.

Saying that, you can’t see in the picture, but I do have some desktop space opposite the versacamm/laser.

If I did have a big job then either the top of the freezer(at the far end) or the dining table 😀 😀

The thing is, as I have made money, I have spent it on equipment, to enable me to make more money. Now I will be at a point, that I can save for a custom built workshop in my garden. 😀

Glad it’s not just me lacking space 😀

I work out of our back bedroom, 7 foot by about ten foot. Can do most taping in there as have a large table and for most signs, banners etc I have use of a 25 x 13 foot room (okay so its the living room 😀 ).

Would love a cadet but apart from the ‘making it pay’ part, bugger knows where I’d put it 😀

I do most of the design work on the living room pc anyway, the one in the bedroom does some design work, runs the plotter and has the accounts on it.
