Thick paper, cardboard templates – what do you use?
Posted by Pane Talev on January 26, 2022 at 9:08 amGood day folks,
Thick paper, cardboard templates – what do you use to position/ install flat cut letters?
When I have piece of flat card board lying around, this is not a problem, I just laser cut a template.
At the moment I need to cut quite large template. Need ideas for material use/ sourcing please.

Hi pane, why not use a cheap indoor vinyl. This is what ive done in the past. Lay the vinyl onto the wall, insert letters, peel off
-
We’ve used paint mask in the past.
It can be a bit problematic when it doesn’t stick as well as you’d like.

Vinyl is to risky for me. Might take paint of the wall. Potentially another problem.
Laser cut cardboard template is sexy. Just need to source flat cardboard or thicker paper.

Use the plotter pen on the rear of the vinyl lamination carrying paper. i.e. the paper you bin. (recycle π)
It is thicker than general paper and the silicon coating helps with moisture etc when working outside. The full paper template is great for templates where you use screws etc.
For acrylic letters where you would glue or tape the letter in place, we baseline cut in stencil low tack vinyl or again in paper which is perf-cut.* Top – Template in paper.
* Bottom – Baseline template in low tack vinyl or paper.-
wow never seen the baseline method! 20 years in the game and still learning simple stuff

This is my template folks. Stays nice and flat. I have 4 lines of flat cuts. That is why I want 1 big piece of cardboard. I have done it Robertβs way in the past, but this is better for me for this job

Thanks Kevin.
That is what I had in mind. Just struggling to find suppliers locally.

i have always used a paper template and never had any problems.
the baseline template is new to me! πpane, that is a pretty large space around your letters in your template?
-
@KarenWhite – Re: large space around my letters – that’s not intentional around my design. But between lines, that is the look / space wanted by the client / architect.

I use stencil vinyl or removable vinyl.
Cut out the letters, smear Siroflex grip and grab glue with a squeegee over the opening the letter is going into, the thickness of the vinyl keeps it a good regular thickness of glue, press the letters in place, remove vinyl after a bit of drying time.

i can see the attraction using a rigid board pane. but is this not a bit overkill, mate?
could you not just laser brown paper?at the end of the day we use what we feel best with, so i am not knocking you in anyway, mate. π
