temps & Times
Posted by Michael Potter on March 18, 2009 at 12:22 amHi I was just reading the thread about Graham’s mugs cracking and finished up by getting really confused re times for mugs.
we were told 200 degrees centigrade for 7 seconds, which is a lot different to Stevie’s 210 seconds. Can anybody shed light on why so much difference.
Many thanks

Hi Chris
Actually we are doing them at 180 degrees for 7 sec. and yes they do come out ok. since we have never done them any other way I am not sure what difference we should expect.
cheers Mike -
Not sure if it helps, but when we were looking at buying a mug press, we were told 120 secs. 7 secs seems really short on the basis of that.
Perhaps it may be worth doing one longer and seeing what the results are?

For 7 seconds you will be "flash" heating the ink and giving it very little time to transfer. You might find some of the colouring, especially the darker colours look slightly faded. Do 2 mugs with the different times and compare. I have also been told the longer time is required to "fix" the polymer to hold the dye fast…………..

For mugs I use 204 degrees for 180 seconds. I only preheat if the mugs have come out of the garage in winter so are really cold otherwise they just go in at room temp.
With regards to Greame’s other thread re failures…….I use Chinese mugs and have never had a failure.

we use xpres mugs and xpres mug press
4 minutes @ 200
which we cut down from 4 1/2 minutes
cant believe you can get away with 7 secs
must be using a microwavestu

Sounds more like a transfer rather than sublimation. Even if a mug was left in a press for 60 secs then you would still have a faded image. We do lots of mugs so have squeezed the time down as much as possible and are okay on 2mins at 195c. I wouldn’t go much less and might add and extra 10/15 secs if a lot of darker coverage is needed.
