    sorry just a rant………

Why do some Printers, signwriters & clients insist on putting part of a phone number with the code.

    I live in Reading area……..Tel. Code: 0118
    so 0118 9123456 / 0118 912 3456 or such…..

So why do people do this Tel. 01189 123456…..

If I’m local I need the 9 with the number not the 0118…..
sorry rant over just does my head in the number of clients who go oh yeh get ya point now…….but my van has it written that way or my leaflets were printed like that so can we stay the same…..

We have the area code on our van and so do a lot of our clients ….. because we dont just do work in our own area …. we go all over the place so hence the need for us to have an area code.

I can see the point-less-ness (word?) of having an area code when it comes to a shop front sign/take-away situated sign etc. though and we usually advise not to bother in some cases.

    😀

crikey I do apologise Im having a “can’t find the right words day” today 🙄

My rant wasn’t about having the code at all.

just the No. 9 is part of my local Tel. No. not part of the code……

I think he meant that part of the phone number is in with the code hence the “01189” the 9 being part of the phone number not the code.

Believe it or not our local yellow pages does the opposite, the last digit of the code gets put on the telephone number so 015396 (Newbiggin code) 234?? becomes 01539 (kendal code) 6234??, now that gets you nothing around here.
Wow you’ve got me ranting now Vivid 🙂

    Steve

P.S. No my phone number doesn’t have ? in it 😀

    Hi Steve,

I know what you mean, I’m just down the road in 015395 or is it 01539 5, all the locals insist their phone number is only 5 digits long not 6.

I have to recite the full number when anyone asks – or simply give them the local rate 0845 number 😉

015395, that’s Milnthorpe – Levens area isn’t it? Down in that area later today, not work related though.

i’m a little onfused about the original popst,

as a lad, my phone number (not my current on now !) was 3198, then i learned as i got older that we had an std code, of 0825, so my numbr was 0825 3198,

then latterly some of the newer numbers in the town had a 6 added at the front to make it a 5 digit number,

eventually all numbers had the prefix of 76, making my number 763198, a six digit number,

then they added the 1 into the code, making it 01825 763198. that is how a number is spaced in my opinion,

most places have a 5 digit code, and a six digit number,

only certain cities are different to my knowledge, i use the same 5/6 grouping for mobiles, all mobiles used to be a 4 digit code, then went to a 5 digit code,

that said i often break up the 6 digit number into two groups of three, so it’ll say 01825 763 198, 90% of people will give you their number as a code in one, and then split the number up into two, makes sense to write it as its said, and the passing customer is far more like to be able to read and remember it ! tho i’ll leave the final choice to the customer !

I do my numbers as 01825 763198 , main reason its easier to remember.

First part area code 01825 which most would know in your area , my area being 01372, or 020

then 763 198 its easier to read 3 numbers and write them down then look again and write down the next 3, instead of trying to remember 6 and write down in one go??

Reading area code was when I was a kid……..
    Tel. 0734 1234
    Changed to 01734 1234
    Then 0118 123456
    Then 0118 9123456

As you stated Drag-On most are 5 digit then 6 digit. Reading area is not and some other areas also so I belive.

Guess I shouldn’t moan BT keep us in work…..
I usually space as Tel. 0118 123 4567 easier on the eye as someone said

Just my original point was 9 is part of number not code..code is only 4 digits.

Dam what did I start here….lmao

That’s what confuses people around us Drag-On, as you’ll have noticed mine and Marks are both based on the Kendal code of 01539, mine 015396 and Marks is 015395, both 6 digits.
If you were to try and ring me locally with the 6 off the code on my number as it’s written in the yellow pages you won’t get through as the 6 is part of the area code. Quite a lot of codes up here are 6 digit.

The original post was about people putting part of the tel No. onto the code so people trying to ring locally would not be ringing the right number.

    A little rant that’s turned into a bit of a discussion on STD’s 🙂

sometimes i kern a small half-space between the last 6 digits, depends on the mood i am in.
To be honest, how many of you kern your numbers?

perhaps we should be more euro/international friendly and tell everyone that +44 (1234) 223344 should be the way. Then there is another argument as with most phones, you dial 00 44 1234 223344
    (i think)

    right ! i think i’m following now,

so is you number a 5 digit number ? and the code a six ? if so i would still write the code as 5 and the number as 6,

regards london, reading etc, of any with a 10 digit number, i would write them as say 020 359 6262 as its the most common way fo seeing them written,

i dunno about joe bloggs on the street, but i’ve spent a huge amount of time phoning people all over the country (damn… i still remember peoples numbers from the other end of the country, wh i’ve not spoken to in 3 or 4 years ! ) but there are ways of writing the numbers that fall naturally to say / read, so thats the way i do em !

Nope Code is 4 Digit 0118
    Tel No. 7 digit 9123456

    work that out…lol

Steve is it not that your area code is 01539 then you have an inner and outer code 6 or 5 like london code is 020 then you have inner london 7 and outer 8
    so an inner london number is 020 7222 0055 and 020 8222 0055 for outer, if im in a 020 london area i can dial 7222 0055 and not 020 7222 0055, but a lot of people down here put 0208 222 0055…..

Scrub all the above 😳 just re-read you post Steve yep thats what happens down here
