  • Symptoms of a worn Cutting strip?

    Hey All,

I’m just wondering what the general symptoms of a worn cutting strip are?

I know the following question is kinda like how long is a piece of string but how long would you expect a cutting strip to last?

    Thanks in advance

Inconsistent cutting depth, deformed lines on text etc.

Life should be a good several years.

ahh but I’m kak handed and possibly managed to chew it up when I first got the cutter.

The slight issue I have and its only just started is there is a point of text that doesn’t cut, for example like the right side of a H, this happens at the same point all the way through a few metres of vinyl, all the other text is fine, does this sound like a cutting strip issue, I’m sure it is from what you guys say.

Its kinda like a low spot as the vinyl is scored but not cut through all the way, I know its not the pressure as all the other text is fine.

    Cheers again

Does the cutting error position correspond to the grip rollers? If so, depending on the type of cutter, perhaps the blade holder is too tight in the holding bracket. If mine is then the blade holder touches the rubber roller when passing and does not get pushed down to the vinyl properly.

the fault you mention Garrie is the start & finnish of the cut for each letter.
this is usually a sign that the knife is worn & doesn’t finnish the cut properly.
could also mean the settings on your cutter might just need altering slightly to take up the wear of the blade. usually easier to replace the blade.
also check there isn’t any residue of the vinyl stuck up it’s orrifice, blocking the blade from moving around in the holder.
    hope that helps.

No No the fault only occurs at one point in the vinyl, say I’m cutting 610mm there is a point at about 325mm where the vinyl is just scored and not fully cut through, this is only for about 1mm, after that everything else cuts fine.

It doesn’t matter what letter or if its a circle or box.

Garrie do a visual check to see if the strip is flush all the way along the width, the symptons you give could mean a few things.

    1) Uneven cutting strip

    2) Head rail is not true, turn the machine off and move the carriage along the width, does it move freely all the way along.

    3) If the point of the problem is where a grit roller is then it could point to the grit roller not sitting level.

    Regards
    Nigel

PS Good to see you too at Sign UK, so many members there this year and glad I got to speak to so many 😀

Funky, will give all those suggestions a blast 😀

Its not causing me too much concern as its only a small point in the vinyl, plus its only just started to happen this morning. just wanted to get my head round it (?)

    Thanks again all.
