Sun strip – Advice
Posted by Matthew on November 9, 2009 at 8:17 pmI have a customer who is after a sun strip inside the front windscreen of a vehicle. This is to be made with Limo tint and to include some text which (if possible) is to be in metallic silver.
The last time I used metallic vinyl, it had a kind of paper back adhesive which is no good as the text needs to be cut in reverse. Does anyone have any ideas or know about a double sided metallic vinyl?
Thanks in advanceMatt

I like the sound of that . Can you post some pics when finished so we can see how it goes.

dont forget that sun visors are impairing the vision of the driver, normally we turn everyone away who asks for it.

Normally they are outwith the wiper swept area of the windscreen so OK

so it seems, but on my car the wiper is almost a full sweep of the glass, so not worth it imo

We do tons of these but they have to go on the outside as you will find on all cars the rear view mirror is bonded to the window. The police don’t seem to mind but we always warn people its an MOT failure. I don’t think the issue is too strict as they sell them in Halfords.

Sun visors/strips should be no bigger than 6 cm from the edge of the black matrix on the windscreen and should not be within the wiper sweep and should permit no less than 45% VLT (Visible Light Transmission)
Saying that we install a lot and simply advise the customer that ultimately it is their responsibility to ensure their vehicle complies with any rules/regulations
Usually a sun strip is done in 5% VLT (Limo/Privacy) in order to be effective.
As someone said earlier, they can go to halfords or any other car spares shop or even fleebay and order visors that usually average 8 inches in width.

We had a spell a while ago where the police were ripping them off peoples cars because they said they were not legal. They didn’t seem to mind a single line of text if it wasn’t to large but anything with a coloured backing seemed to get removed.
i always thought that the maximum permissible height of a band was 100mm or 4 inches not the 120mm Bob mentioned. Have known people fit smaller wiper blades to ensure the blade was clear of the sunstrip as well.
I used to do quite a few of these a few years ago but can’t remember the last time I was asked for one now.

Thanks for the input on this.
I was aware of the laws involved and my customer is happy to face the consequences if it fails the MOT. It’s to be fitted on a VW Transporter so no inside mirror to contend with. I’ll post pics if it goes ahead. Thanks again

As others have mentioned the Law seems inconclusive on the amount of sunstrip allowed. I have heard of MOT failures not allowing any strip through to the 4 inches into the wiper area.
However going back to the initial question when we install interior graphics to a window strip it will always be a silver window film which is thinner and raise the tint film less around the edges and last longer.
In my mind if using vinyl it should go on the exterior.Vinyl = exterior
Silver window film = interior
