i’m having issues again:-( I’m at uni and our regular paper supplier has gone out of business. When doing my own mugs i bought some from Ebay from someone called sweetie haven, this paper was awesome, but they have disppeared now, £11 for 100 A4 was awesome for the quality. since they have gone i have ordered signal sub paper on ebay, rubbish!! and another one thats sealed and comes from china, also rubbish. I cannot really afford the prices that some are banding about. we are talking about 100 sheets of paper, not gold.

can anyone recommend a good supplier, please, Emily xxx

probably disappeared after they sold all the stuff that fell off the a back of a lorry !

Emily, the material cost is a small percentage of the product, why dont you just buy proper stuff from a reputable supplier?

Xpres paper is £10+vat for 100 sheets. You’ll have to pay postage on top though. I never use anything else. I’ve tried others but Xpres works perfectly for me.

    Emily, enlighten me please,
it doesnt matter if you are a student, or a part time sign maker.
if you are producing a product, and selling it, then the cost of the materials
should be based on your gross profit, not if you can afford to buy it, the materials will convert to profit when you sell them.
Not sure why the "i’m only a student" should be part of the equation

hi Peter, because i don’t sell mine, i give most of them away as gifts or to friends. i have sold a few, a guy i know was starting up a garage business, so i print a dozen out for him. so cost is very important to me, the paper i had before was awesome, i’ve even asked where they got it from so i could get some but nothing, may look at xpres

xpres can take a run and jump….£6 for shipping 100 A4 pieces of paper is laughable

    sorry I mis understood.
what you want is a minimum trade price for your hobby?
are you studying anything to do with signmaking at uni?
And can I ask why do you need to give stuff away?

    Emily,
they have to pack it and post it,
When you eventually graduate and live in the real world, you will realize that things have a real value and aren’t available with student discounts 😀 😀

Hi Emily, Doesn’t matter where your paper is from – you’ll have to pay the vat and carriage and as Peter said you should work out your material costs and work them into the final selling price. If you do give some mugs away then the selling price to the guy at the garage would have to go up to cover this. It might be a hobby but if it costs you every time you print a few mugs you’ll be skint all the time.

The one good thing about xpres is the product you buy will be consistent and the supplier won’t disappear unlike your ebay contact.

    Cheers John

thats true about someone disappearing, but £6 is a bit steep, I’m doing Art and graphic design and am in my second year, i hope to eventually go into magazine publishing. So yes this is abit of a hobby, it’s just something i have got into.

I am also sublimating other things, but find printing enjoyable.

Of course i know about the real world and i understand that people have to make a living but £6 is a lot

No disrespect Peter, but I do believe Students know better than any of us the real value of money. It certainly isn’t easy being a student nowadays having to exist on student loans while having to pay for course fees and materials as well as accommodation and day to day living expenses. All without the benefit of a full time job to support you. If you go on the dole the government will support you, but if you go to University the government gives you nothing to encourage you which is all wrong in my opinion!

    Hi Emily,

£10 for the 100 sheets of paper, £6 for delivery and £2.40 for the vat.
    100 sheets @ £18.40 inc – just over 18p per sheet = 2 mugs per sheet.

Work it that way, and the paper costs 9p per mug – now I think that’s cheap! 😀

Xpres paper is the best ive found and if I was posting it via Royal Mail I would charge atleast £4 p&p. Xpres use couriers and insured delivery costs more.

Consider buying 200 sheets, if your enjoying doing it then 200 sheets will last no time at all anyway and it doesnt go out of date or spoil aslong as its kept in dry conditions.

And I get 3 cups per sheet John, you Geordies need to learn to be more frugal.

Yes, and it still fits 3 per sheet.

in answer to Peter, yes we have done some sign stuff at Uni, we’ve done concept designs and looked at all kinds of materials, polypropylene plastics etc and even done some, I enjoy it, which is why i am doing art and graphic design. I love the images on this site. Most of my uni stuff is currently classic art and sculpture.

and as for the hobby, well i got into sublimating last year after a crash course at uni, and decided to give it a try myself but wasn’t very successful in my first attempts, i do give most of my stuff away it’s true, infact nearly all if i’m honest, but i to be honest my crap isn’t very sellable. The guy i sold some mugs to for his garage, that was easy, a one colour design with text, i got £3.50 per mugs, there was only a dozen but at least i got something.

i see what you mean everyone about xpres being 9p a design…2 per sheet, i will definately have to consider them,
    cheers Em xx

Sorry Paul, just measured it and 3 does fit landscape – doh! 😳 never even considered that it would fit this way – just assumed it would be 2 up portrait.
