  • Stretching contravision round the back window.

Posted by Simon Worrall on December 2, 2015 at 9:27 pm

    Hi
I am getting a lot of contravision rear windows to do on SUVs and utes. When I measure them up a lot of them seem to max out at 1400mm, give or take.
Obviously that is a bit of a bummer because the material is 1370 wide, and you have to print the material lengthways, which is either a waste or at the least, inconvenient, having to store odd shaped bits of material.
Is it acceptable to print it to 1370mm, and "Stretch" the material the extra few centimeters round the back window when applying, and save a bit of money for the customer? Or is this just cheap practice and unacceptable?

    Simon.

I guess the more expensive contravision is cast wrap vinyl.
I spose I answered my own question!

Ive just done some research. I cant find contravision in anything but calendered vinyl. And none of the brands are even recognisable. I would be interested to know if it was avaiilable in cast.

It just doesn’t stretch to any meaningful degree – conformable to a point, but not able to heat & pull another 30 – 40mm out of it (liable to shrink back anyway).

There isn’t a cast version. Proper Contravision is polymeric and is reasonably flexible but not really stretchable.and there are quite a few monomerics out there which aren’t suitable for vehicles.

If I am fitting contravision to a rear window with a convex shape I tend to laminate with an optically clear laminate and a little heat it alows me to stretch the material, never had a failure (yet)

you could just buy a smaller roll to do these say 760 wide and turn them around the other way !
