• Stikka Cutters?

Posted by Beej Curtis on April 8, 2004 at 7:15 am

    Hi All,

I used to own a Houston DMP 66 plotter (back in the 80’s!!) and because I have moved back into the aibrushing world I need vinyl masking for decals, graphics etc.

I’ve seen these small plotters ‘Stikka’ but need a bit of advice. I don’t really need massive cutting abilities but, is it worth shelling out £500-odd squids for a new model of these tiny cutters, or would it be better to get a second-hand, larger machine, so at least I have the opportunity incase something bigger than A4-ish came along?

Also, I have been using Illustrator since the ’88 version, I’m PC-based these days (instead of Mac, altho I have an old one) and I don’t want to use Corel if poss! I want the ability to sketch/scan/draw in Illustrator and then import the eps/.ai into the software and cut. (Man, the first sign software I had was Sign Express, anyone remember that??)

    Cheers chaps

If you shop around it is possible to get a new 24″ cutter for around £800 these days. A better option than the Stikka which would be very restrictive…

I was in your position. Wanting a cutter but not for mainstream vinyl sign production. It seems a lot of money if it’s not earning its keep like most of the guys use them on here.

Nevertheless I am waiting to buy a SummaCut D60 new. You get 3 years warranty etc etc. The prices second hand seem relatively high compared to new which is a good thing if you buy new if you ever wanted to sell it.

I toyed with the idea of a Stika but was well talked out of it, and glad I was. Whatever your project you will find it is too small eventually. You may want to cut masks out for airbrushing and the Stika definately wont do that.

I was looking for a 12″ cutter about 18 months ago.

Bought a stikka. Unpacked it, did 1 cut with it. Packed it up and sent it back. At best it`s a toy.

Save for a bit longer and get a proper machine…. you won`t regret it.

I had a stika 15″ for a while – had to get rid in the end for my own sanity.

Does anyone know which cutters Flynn Signs where selling or how to get in touch with them. In need of a 24″ cutter.

Seen one on ebay which I`ve never heard of – Creation PCUT.

    Cheers

    Hi Andy,

I avoided the Stika. Saw those PCUT on ebay, seems a good price. I was looking at a SummaCut D60 but just got an Ioline Smartrac I/S 60. They are made in America so the UK supplier is making the most of the dollar exchange rate and the price has dropped from £1695 to £1295.

I think Flynn Signs were selling Muttah cutters (sp?). They were selling a whole range of gear as I remember at SignUK, including a diddy business card cutter. I’ll see if the number is in my book at the shop, if so, I’ll PM it to you tomorrow 😀

    Cheers, Dewi
