Sticky problem
Posted by Gareth.Lewis on November 10, 2006 at 8:39 amCan anyone suggest how I may stick plastic locators to a ‘marble type’ fascia board? Ta. I don’t want to rush headlong into using any adhesive in case I affect the surface. No one can tell me exactly what it is and I’m afraid of cracking it. Ta.

Not sure what material your fixing to?
If it’s that fake marble material, then it’s pretty versatile stuff and I’ve seen it drilled and machined in various ways, so you could drill and use self taping screws to fix female locators to the surface.
Is it possible for you to do a test drill hole using a small HSS drill where it won’t be seen, on an edge or behind where the lettering is going to be, and if you use a small enough drill, maybe 2mm, you could fill in a hole with coloured filler if you need to afterwards.

Is there ANY chance I might shatter or crack the board?

Hi Gareth
It sounds like you need to talk to your customer, and get them to sign a disclaimer, if you are that concerned about it.

Can you find out what the material is?
I’ve seen a material supplied by Spandex called Avonite, which is machinable, and I’ve had plenty of experiance at drilling into real marble, but from what you say, it doesn’t sound like the real stuff.
I think you can sometimes reach a point where you have to give it a go once you’ve found out as much as you can, and perhaps you should see if anyone else can help you identify the product that you are working with, and their input can help you build on your confidence.
Personally, I think that these made made products are all pretty user friendly and if it were me, I’d use a small sharp metal drill, and without using hammer action, (just plain drilling) make a test hole.
He who dares……..
