  • Sticking Vinyl to Aluminium cladding

Posted by Dan on August 18, 2023 at 12:06 pm

    Hi all

I’ve been instructed to fit some vinyl to some aluminium cladding to go around pipework. It’s a thin material (feels like a 1mm stainless steel type) and the the diameter will require about 400mm of material to go around it.

I need to fit it to two textures, one is smooth and the other has a bit of a rough bobble type surface. I’ve applied standard polymeric vinyl to it and the results aren’t great.

The vinyl does stick to the smooth surface but not 100%, I could peel it off with a little peel and it’s not got the hold like on a vehicle. On the rough surface it’s even worse and I’m not comfortable fitting this for it to fail in a few months time.

No one seems to do high tack coloured vinyl anymore so I wondered if anyone can suggest anything?

I don’t really fancy laminating a colour onto high tack vinyl if there is another option.

On an interior wall, you could use watered down PVA but I’m not sure if would work in this case.

I have 80 metres of this pipework to fit and it’s all high enough that it requires two people so could be costly if I get it wrong.

    Thanks

    Quick reply for now:
Spandex has recently launched a “high tack” Iamge Perfect coloured range.
Might be worth asking them to send you a colour card and A4 sample to try on the surface.

Thanks but that was what I was going with but I think they’ve stopped doing it when I called up the other day.

Have used the Hi-tak from Spandex for several jobs and its great, should do the job. Only available in some colours though, like the air release.

Thanks guys. they have discontinued the colour I needed but there was a few metres left which I’ve now taken so I can get the job done.

Metamark do M7 in high tack. Limited colours though, White, Black or Grey.

    Thanks everyone.

I managed to get some from Spandex in the end but it had to get sent from abroad.

The bad news is that didn’t stick to the cladding all that well, it’s seems to have some anti stick stuff on it.

Along with that, there is silicone everywhere, does anyone know a product I can paint on to make it stick to the cladding and silicone?

The cladding has to be coloured and I’m running out of options.

    Thanks

      Hey Dan,

slow response, I meant to reply to the first post to work with caution.. sorry!

A lot of the cladding stuff is powder coated, of sorts, and doesn’t take too kindly to vinyls. I did a load of unit No’s (printed, supply only) on our regular Arlon for a local estate, within 3 months they were failing. I re-printed onto MD5High tack and popped down to install myself, 6 months later….

Ultimately i told them they’ll need to either accept the fact that they’ll have to replace regularly, or we make composite panels and mechanicnally fix them to the cladding. They stuck it out with stickers for another 18months before eventually going with my composite option.

These panels in question were probably worse than the standard green or blue cladding, they were charcoal colour and south facing, so lots of heat combined with a less than optimal surface was a recipe…
