  • sticking to MDPE plastic

This morning somebody dropped off a farming implement with a smooth Medium density polyethylene hopper that he wants some stickers put on to. A quick wipe with 3M primer and scrap vinyl was happily sticking fast to this surface.
How long would one expect vinyl to stay adhered to this outside in the weather?

    Simon
providing the primer bonded well as long as the vinyl life, I did thousands of bins during the building of the Olympic Village to this day some bins still have their labels on. Only difference being that i used high tack vinyl but no primer. I would be inclined to say due to the multitude of types of MDPE you have done everything you can to ensure it stays put but cannot guarantee a specific time

    +1 for the hi-tack Kev.
A few years ago we did a trial test for agricultural machinery dealers as their existing decals were coming off. Asked for a sample of their substrate and got a large chunk of Massey Ferguson plastic bodywork droppped off! Had recommended moto-x but ran various media, standard/hi tack and moto-x (most laminated) and only surface prep was IPA clean. Took back to customer and they tested it by hot pressure washing 😮 then used jet at needle setting to nearly touching the decals. Hi Tack and Moto X both survived. Customer went for Hi Tack due to pricing differential. Now repeat customer and we have picked up more work in this field (no pun ha-ha!)
Don’t know what your UV/temp differences are where you are SImon but certainly on the low energy plastic bodywork in UK conditions works a treat 😀
    Cheers

Yes high tack all the way.

As Hugh says, we produced some vinyl for a toolbox to go in aircraft holds, the printer we did it for didn’t belive me when I said you’ll need high tack vinyl. He though the stuff that sticks to vans would be fine.

Got him to get a box from their client and showed him… since then he never questioned the material we suggested. :thumbup2:

Just to add to this if you are ever stuck and need to use normal vinyl on say a MDPE or HDPE plastic flash a blow touch across it. You will see like a haze come across the plastic and disappear this is the plasticiser evaporating normal vinyl will normally stick & bond as usual. The PDF explaind the process wouldn’t want to do it on loads of panels but ok if you get stuck
