Looking to add stationary printing (business cards, letterheads, flyers etc) to our growing business. Need to look in to machines and was hoping for a recommendation on printers as well as best option with regards to buy or lease etc. I would presume we would also need a guillotine to trim everything.

Looking for any comments suggestions help etc

    Thanks

    Hi Warren,

I use a konica C500 pro, its on lease from Danwood on a service agreement. We pay a fixed "click" price which covers us for unlimited call outs, parts and toner. The 6500 is the newer model and is meant to be very good and is just coming into the refurb range.

Danwood are good as you can add the extra units to their refurb machine at no extra cost, we’ve got the large capacity tray and booklet finisher (staples, folds etc) Whichever you go for make sure it will print SRA3 size so you can trim down 2 x A4 with bleed. Also make sure they put you on a "single click" rate so that your SRA3 sheet is only one click rather than 2.

Make sure whatever you do you are on a service agreement, these things go wrong and would be mighty costly if you arent covered.

Guillotine, we run an ideal one from CJB printing equipment, if you get an electric one (which I’d recommend) then make sure you get it from a reputable company and ensure it comes with its safety certificate – you’ll need an inspection and certificate every 6 months (law)

    Anything else, shout

In the shop my dad has a xerox DC250, with finishing unit, same as andy it folds staples, punches. He does a few order of service booklets birthday invites etc.

He also has an electric guillotine.

Interested in the certificates you need for the guillotine Andy as we never bothered.

Service contract is a must, when he signed up they offered 2000 clicks per month @ 1p b&w 7p colour, if he goes over its still the same, but pays for 2k regardless. Just an additional consideration.

    Hi David,

Look at around point 94 in the linked pdf.

    http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/priced/power-guillotines.pdf It states that;

    quote :

Every six months a competent guillotine engineer or independent engineer/engineer surveyor should perform a thorough inspection of the machine which should comprise a series of performance checks and tests in addition to the various checks and tests carried out at each shift, after knife changes and every month. These are detailed in Section 3 of this publication. A written report should be issued and kept in your log (see Appendix 2).

If you are going to add printed paper products to your repertoire – remember to spell stationEry correctly in your adverts 😉 😉

something to remember is that colour laser prints cant be passed through 90% of desktop laser machine especially B&W Laser desktop printers. the fusing temp is much higher on B&W machines and it just peels of the toner from the colour copies.

I always mention this to customers when they order letterheads and 9 times out of 10 I litho print them

This reminds me of the time not long after I started up when I ordered some business card, letterheads and compliments slips from another new start business in my area. She was at great pains to tell me that "compliments" should be spelt "complements" (her husband told her so) everyone else was wrong and he was right..

….this threw me for a while so I examined all the compliments slips I could find from a range of sources and finally decided she and her old man were wrong and I was right all along. So I told her to go ahead and print my compliments slips with my "misspelling 😕 :lol1:

Mind you, a stationery printer that moves around all the time wouldn’t be much use, so perhaps Warren is right in requesting a stationary printer…

    Sorry Warren, I Digress 😕 😳

Hi Warren we have Konica Bizhub 6500 and 5500 critical things are cost per click and maintenance contract, you want to be as close to £0.03p per copy as possible. You will also need guillotine, folder, creaser, booklet maker etc depending on what you want to make, looki into it carefully as investment is quite high front end but it definitely pays back

Thanks guys, much food for thought. Its early days looking in to it but I get asked quiet a lot and have a lot of start up businesses who would want this.

Oops about the spelling, I use auto complete too much on the iPad and that’s how it spelt it and I never even noticed.

As for staff ………. This is sort of the reason as the only type of people I can find are "designers" so thinking of pushing more in that direction, like I said its early days and if I can find the right person then I may scrap this idea and go with something else but just want as much info as possible.

    Cheers warren
