  • Stand off lettering on curved wall

Posted by Colin Crabb on June 26, 2012 at 4:12 pm

Just looked a small job in a local supermarket, they require the’re cut vinyl lettering to be replaced with stand off style lettering, only down side its a curved surface.
I’ve put this type of lettering on shop fronts and nice flat walls, but never curved wall (Convex) – will the lugs still line up okay with the template being a curve?

Anyone had similar work, love to know how it went for you,

    Cheers!

    Hi Colin

Use a vinyl template to make sure the template is flush to the wall otherwise you may have trouble lining it up and will take a bit longer trying to tape a paper template flush around the curve, otherwise should be fine.

it is a more effetiant way, only downside to that warren is that depending on the surface you can peal away the paint/paper when removing the vinyl.

Colin, if the letters arent big and the wall does not curve tight you should be fine.
But applying large letters to a tight curving wall will causing problems as the middle locations of the letter will be closer to the surface than the outside ones.
I had this problem in the past. Small letters on a tight surface I got away with.
But had a large logo at the end which I ended up doing in aluminium and having to roll it into the shape of the curve. Worked great in the end but glad it was only a single logo and not all the letters.
As I say, just depends on size of text and tightness of radious. Other wise you shouldn’t have a problem.

Colin if you cant curve the letters themselves, then make sure you have two vertical lines of lugs and the letters form a bridge between them. – that way the curve as Rob described will not need shorter lugs in the middle. Shown here from the top.

Idiotic eureka moment! I just realised what your question was about. Will the lugs line up with the template…
The answer is no, but if you tape the template to the curve- (with some protection for the paint) – and press up the letters while on the curve, it will work fine.
