We’ve recently bought from this product from Applelec Sign Components
and we were very pleased with the results – bear in mind that the white LED’s can have a slight tint of blue, making them look a bit ‘cold’

Yeh, you’re right enough – just moulded ones.

Maybe try PRECISION – have used them for builtup in the past.

Not sure on the illuminated side though.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Always used Signfab and found them very good price wise. Delivery time is normally pretty good also but sometimes communication can be a slight issue

I heard there are very few built up steel letters that are made in the UK, there are one or two suppliers but that they are getting pushed out by cheap thai imports.

If this is the case in times of economic strife we all should ask were the goods come from.

    Gordon,

I think that your info may be a bit duff there – we manufacture stainless steel built up letters in house as do at least three other trade manufacturers within a mile of our office!

My information is correct, I had a delivery of built up metal letters from a major UK trade supplier that had a thai address on the inner boxes, it must have been left in in error, the address was the company below.

    http://www.metallet.com/index.html

I emailed them and they were happy to supply me, telling me they supply to a lot of trade suppliers in the UK. The prices and quality are amazing.

I am not mentioning any names but please don’t tell me my info is "duff".

I never used them, as my point is that in current times we should be ‘buying british’ if at all possible, and support companies such as yours

    Gordon,

The Thai based company that you posted the link to seem to know their stuff & churn out a bundle of letters – let’s hope that they don’t become more widely known over here. Times are tough enough in the sign trade as it is without work being siphoned off to Thailand!

My comment about your information being "duff" was not meant to be hostile or confrontational but you stated that:

I heard there are very few built up steel letters that are made in the UK, there are one or two suppliers but that they are getting pushed out by cheap thai imports.

All I wanted to do was point out that this is simply not correct, whilst I am sure that there are trade suppliers who broker their letter work out to other firms such as the firm in Thailand you mention there are also a large number of us who don’t – far in excess of the one or two as mentioned in your post.

I hope that UK sign companies continue to believe in the "buy British" message that you trumpeted and are not swayed by the cheap prices offered by Thailand (and others) – we, as UK based suppliers offer a comprehensive, quality service that goes way beyond price alone – try calling the Thai based supplier when you’re halfway up a ladder & are having problems with the template!

Having said that though, we are acutely aware of the fact that Eastern European – and now it seems Far Eastern – suppliers are quoting prices that we just cannot touch, their labour rates are far lower than those in the UK and we are having to continually sharpen our pencil to ensure that the difference between these foreign suppliers and us here in the UK is as small as possible, we then stand a chance of being able to win the "price isn’t everything" argument!

Saw these Thai guys at the sign show in Coventry last year and their stuff was good but not quite up with some of our own. Looks like most of the letter was being made on the machine that was also being demo’d there (lots of folds instead of joins).
I got them to quote a job and they were cheaper than any UK quote – even with delivery. However, how are you going to give out lead times or respond to an urgent job when your stuffs coming from the other side of the world and you don’t speak the same language? Imagine the stress if you had 1 day before the shop opened and still no letters!
    Keep it British!

Martin, I have been let down terribly by UK suppliers so I don’t see the difference in waiting for a job from here or abroad.

This is not the company that was at coventry, the guy told me in the email that they are owned by USsign in America, their production process looks top notch.

I agree, "buy british", but british suppliers have to remember these guys are snapping at their heels if their service doesn’t come up to scratch

Ian, I did not suggest it was any secret, also you must be thinking of a different company as these guys are from bangkok, Thailand and they were only too ready to supply to me in the UK.

Infact they followed their quote up twice via email

    Hi
prices may be good when quoted but what about when Customs delay it & whack their percentage for import duty on or even that they get damaged during customs search etc. Bear in mind the country these are coming from officials are going to be taking a interest in them from time to time.

I have just had quotes from quite a few companies for the same product and the best quote came from mod-edit please read board rules not actually ordered from them yet so can’t comment on the quality yet.
