Hey everyone, when working out costs our printer RIP gives out measurements of the job printed, it says sq mt & liner mtr, so when working out costs if you price it with sqmt then you will loose the cost of the unprinted media, is this correct ? I know it might be only a small amount, but say you have a print that 850mm square and you want 10 qty, and your printing on cast material thats 8.5 mtrs of waste thats not costed for, am I just looking at this wrong I have had a heavy (beer) weekend. :bangshead:

Hi Gary that should be correct. Liner metre is the width of the media u are using eg 1370/1600 etc, then x by per metre, square metre is as it says. I charge per liner metre so eg 1600 across x by per metre. So if ur charge say £45 per square metre then the liner metre cost per metre would be £72 per metre 1.6 x £45. This should be correct (correct me if I’m wrong guys). Hope this helps, some companies charge per square some per linear,

i charge by the square metre but print by the linear mitre (if that makes sense).

I use 1370 material and charge by the square metre even if some prints are 1200 wide.

Same if the prints are 800 i still charge sqm price.

I always go by the Liner meter to cover the cost of material not whats being printed on it other wise its very easy to be loosing out unless you have a lot of small jobs you can use to infill the space left from bigger jobs thus making Sqr Meter better to use.

almost always linear meter, if a customer wants a 3m x 250mm sticker doing, they can either pay for 3m at whatever price the material dictates, or have a 2/3 piece sticker for half that cost!

I find that it evens itself out, some you lose (printing 1300 wide) some you win (smaller less coverage pritns).

the only exception is when doing lots of large dibond flood coats of solid colours / prints, then it’s sqr mtr due to the amount you’d ‘lose’!!

Always charge by the "linear" metre.
Not only have you got to compensate for the wasted digital media, you also loss the same again when laminating it!

Same applies when printing contour cut graphics. You are printing and cutting, and in many cases laminating too.
You should cover your labour costs for loading, unloading machines, laminate, back to cutter, contour cutting time, weeding time, application tape etc.

It is things like this that go a miss, only for your costs and labour to add up!
