• Square bit supplier?

Posted by James Martin on May 23, 2009 at 7:35 pm

    Hi

I’m trying to dismantle a lightbox and its got screws with a wee square hole, b-gger!

Can anyone tell me where apart from the U.S I can get hold of a set with a bit to fit?

Hi James, These are Robertson Square Drive Bits. The #2 is the most popular here in the states. These fasteners are mostly used for anchoring the exterior metal sheeting to enclosed trailers and campers. They are used in high production shops and sometimes have a drill bit made onto them.

I just found this chart, hope this helps.

Robertson Drive screws are a Canadian invention. We’ve used them for almost 100 years in this country. If we buy something that has Phillips screws, it is almost certainly imported. The square drive is a very practical design, but if you don’t have the driver bit, it’s not much good. #2 is the most common, being used with #8, and #10 screws.
You could try using a very small slot type bit and insert it diagonally in a pinch, but it would need to be just the right size.
If you can wait for a week or two for the post, I’d be happy to mail a set to you.

James they are a standard type of screw used by sparks, you can get the bit for removing them in most good hardware shops they come in 3 or 4 differnt sizes just like pz bits. B&Q will have them

James, Ian is correct. I’m 99% certain the screws will be Screwlux (Robertson seems to be the generic manufacturer – like all vacuums are called Hoovers). They are common in electrical fittings and although there probably are several sizes I have only ever seen one. Bought a Screwlux screwdriver a year or 2 ago from local electrical wholesaler – about £7-8. If you have signed a van for a spark recently – ask him for the loan of one! I got this set recently – http://www.screwfix.com/prods/15297/Scr … Set-100Pc#. It covers quite a few of the odd screw types that pop up regularly especially vandal-proof screws, very useful in our line of work.

    tks guys

I have a S1 in my possession right here, my mate had one.

If it doesn’t fit I’ll get the set form screwfix, I see they have four sizes.

Every time you buy a drill they give you a pack of hex bits or security bits,
never the one you want though.

Ended up ordering all sorts of bits and bobs, like damaged screw removal kits etc, looking for the things myself.

    cheers.

Some decking screws use to use them.
