• Specials Board

Posted by Paulsad on April 29, 2004 at 2:53 pm

Hi sign gurus – Ive recently done a butty shop exterior, windows etc. and the nice lady has asked me to do a specials board (inside the shop) so she can either write or stick on her tuna, mayonnnaise & marmalade daily specials etc.
What’s the best format (ie type of board etc) for this as she wants something looking neat and tidy (she’s no artist)
    :DThanks – Paul

There are special pens on the market, cant remember the names of them, but they do them in various fluorescent colours, which are wirtable onto chalk boards and other surfaces like vinyl.
The pens are marker pens similiar to dry-wipe markers and can be easy cleaned off. Having said this, that’s another option for her, using dry wipe marker onto dry-wipe vinyl. You can make the board up for her and apply the dry- wipe vinyl onto the surface area.
This method is one I usually offer and they are go like hot cakes.

    Hope this helps. 😛

cabriofx is right there as many dry wipe and fancy pens on the go..
another method is to go to B&Q and buy some black board paint.
you basicaly make the sign from what you wish and paint an area to allow the shop owner to right in his specials with chalk.
chris (fluidedge) did a post a few weeks ago showing some pictures of a large sign like this. very smart. 😉

You can get the markers from here http://www.rainbowchalk.com/frames25.htm

I normally use either a special dry wipe vinyl in either white or clear overlayed on the backing board of your choice. The clear is good as you can make the board any colour you like. Or I use the proper black board laminate which you get from people like Cox or Amari in either single or double sided. This is good stuff as it always cleans up really well and never needs repainting, but it’s only available in matt black.

    Hope thats some help !

I’ve got a job like this too.

Can Cox supply the board? I spoke to our rep on Friday and all he offered me was the Wonderboard. It looks very good but only comes in set sizes and, needless to say, they are not the ones I need.

I am just about to make up a swinging sign that the shop can write on with Dry Wipe Markers, but I was going to cover the white, steel sign with ordinary clear vinyl. You guys seem to be talking about some special clear vinyl for these markers, or am I ok with just normal clear?

    Cheers

    John,

I get mine from either Cox or Amari in Birmingham so I’m sure they can supply it in your area too. Never heard of this wonderboard stuff so cant help on that but the blackboard laminate is available in large sheets no problem – it’s just the cutting of it that is a pain in the neck (I will upload images/price details in the file swapping forum !) I get them to cut to size for me or you can cut it on a router quite nice too.

    Dave,

There is special white and clear dry wipe vinyls available from various suppliers. You may well have problems with std clear vinyl in my experience. The pens dont wipe off well after they have been on for a while and leave a “ghost” image behind. I would recommend going for the proper stuff to avoid problems – you can get both types from Hexis and other suppliers.

    Hope that helps guys !

    Nigel
