…sorry I think this may have been answered before. But I have a real BIG problem with junk mail, I would imagine about 500 a day. Does anyone know anything that works WELL to help stop it? I have downloaded mailwasher from dowload.com, but some of the product reviews say it made things worse. It’s a nightmare sifting through tons of email looking for one that may be important.

I need something to work with Outlook Express, if such a thing exists I don’t mind paying! 🙂

It seems to have gotten much worse since a friend had a go at registering my site with some of the search engines?

There was a thread started by Martin C., I’ll see if I can resurrect it Brian.. think Lorraine had some good answers for it. Hope I’m remembering this correctly and alcohol hasn’t chewed my brain into a pile of useless mush! 😉

If you discover a good one Brian, i would be really glad to hear what it is. I have a smallish problem with the mail atm (about 30-40 a day) but as you say it’s a pain in the backside. Good luck.

i have nortons mate.. i have norton firewall. antivirus and spam filter.. works great. i get about 30-40 maybe more spams a day and all just go to my spam folder. one clcik and all are gone.
sometimes you get the odd email that get thru.. you clcik it and click “this is spam” and it autmaticaly adds simular to the spam list.

    Nice one Dewi 😆

Rob, I purchased and installed the Norton Spam prog which came with Norton Internet Security 2004 and the package was a NIGHTMARE. Caused major probs with all three of my pc’s crashing etc. Then the uninstall utility wouldnt work and I had to spend hours manually editing the registry to remove it all 👿
I gave up and sent it back for a refund – got NAV2004 and Firewall2004 now instead which seem OK.
Think it was probably my win98se but further investigation showed lots of others having similar probs too so maybe youre luck there.

Can I download it from their website Rob? I assume you must be able to.

Nik my email address is anything@impact.co.uk or .com, the anything being ANYTHING obviously 😮

Every time I try the search facility I get dozens of threads, not quite got the hang of it 🙁 Thought I had seen it before though Dewi!

Nigel what I would give for only 40 of them a day!

    Brian,

Yeah I guess 40 or so seems great compared to 500 😉 I was told to avoid “catchall” e-mail addresses because a lot of the stuff gets sent out to made up addresses like sales@…. or enquiries@…. just on the offchance it gets through. So maybe if you limited the addresses to the ones you need only, you could get shot of at least some ?

I know what you mean about the search on this site – it does seem a little quirky to me too !

If only I knew how to Nigel! I had thought of the before honest! maybe that’s the question I should be asking the guy that sorted it for me?

I would guess 99% of them are not any of the email addresses I actually use, the bit before the @ is usually nonsense!

nigel!! i have bought norton professional from day one that is win 95 to the present day!! has never worked on any of the six pc’s i had !!!

gave up a long time ago, it actually hogged your pc all the time, so simple things could take forever to do!! ditched!!

with not being allowed to post here, e-mail me i have a few really good programmes that really work especially adaware 6.0

I just had a look at the message rules in outlook express but I don’t think you can do it there very well. So I guess it would be a job for your ISP/email host really.

    …. now theres a thought 🙄

Another tip I was given which applies if you get “random” addresses used is to make your e-mail address on your website an “image” rather than actual text. This means that the web crawler programs that pick up e-mails for the spammers can’t read it. It’s not so easy for the customers because they have to type it out but you could have an enquiry form instead – just some ideas that may help.

Rob, my NAV and Firewall are fine it was just the Internet Security suite with the spam prog that messed up my systems. I havn’t seen the norton spam program sold separately.

…got some of those but mine are mostly offers to make things bigger & bigger for longer 😮 😮

….anyway thanks for the advice guys. Think I will start by taking a look at PC World tomorrow. Would rather have something I can see for my money than punch in my c/card details & wait for something to download 😮

Robert I had wondered if somebody that doesn’t like me had been registering my email addressess with alll kinda dodgy sites?….

Anyway I am gonna start my own get rich campaign, “become a Signmaker” I will promise of untold riches, stays in luxury £200 a night hotels, can I use you as a reference Rob?! 😀

Someone’s doing that for real Brian, something along the lines of ‘make safety signs for profit’… saw it not so long back in the Loot! 😆 Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are many ppl who make a good living, maybe more, from selling safety signs, but this advert was bunched in with the ‘make it bigger, longer and carry on til morning’ brigade! 😮 Doesn’t instill much confidence really when they’ve throw in 499 other ‘businesses you can run from home ideas’ as well. 😉

Wots wrong with mail washer then ??

Select words for filters and it highlights for deletion only downloads the header and some text fast as you will get if your 56K.

Works pretty well deleting from the server and not downloading the carp !! in the first place.

Forbie, is that the only way it can tell spam, by checking for sample words ? If so I personally think this would only get rid of about 20% of my spam as they are well aware of this kind of filter and just replace “A” with “4” and “S” with “5” or add loads of dots/dashes etc. I also get a lot which only have a “graphic” content and no actual text i.e. the text is within an image in the message. The subject lines are meaningless too like “re: your phone call” or sometimes nothing at all !
I’m not saying it won’t help but you have to be real careful with this type of filter that you don’t start wiping out your genuine messages too 😕

Don’t know if theres a magic solution out there but I hope so 😉
