• Space saver

Not sure if this is in the right place but here goes.
For anyone interested, we needed to make more production space this Summer and quickly!
Things were getting out of hand and we could not move to bigger premises.

    We therefore had to improvise.
We had recently refitted a shop front in Torquay and were left with amongst other things, some 8×4 di bond, used on one side. The back side was good and still had the protective coat attached.

It seemed they could be the basis for two benches. Along with my chief (and only!) installer, we fabricated two benches which are ideal for many things from app tape application, to laying up graphics and anything else really. We built a frame for the di bond and then attached this to the wall via a batten and hinges. This meant the top could be swung up out of the way when not in use. It is held upright by hooks in the wall. The legs were hinged so that when the bench is lifted, they fold flat to the wall. Additionally, we placed our table saw between the two sheets which created a large bed to cut full sheets of material with ease.
With the benches down we can still work on a van upto Transit size and can raise one or both if we have say a big Sprinter or LDV.
This has meant we can stay at our present location and increase our up to dramatically.

Please excuse the mess in the area, we are now extending our computer room to accommodate our printer and plotter more comfortably. Pictures of that when completed.

Hope this is even remotely interesting to someone. It beats throwing away ‘free’ materials.

Peter wish I had some blank walls to implement this brilliant idea

    Thanks Lynn
We are lucky in that respect. Without this modification, I don’t know how we could manage now.

Peter clever idea and if it gives you the space you need without having to move to bigger premises then that will help keep your costs down as a bigger unit would be more in rates.

I have something along the same lines for laying up graphics onto boards, I didn’t have the room for a table so built a sort of blackboard easel. Fixed to the wall and at a slight angle so it only sticks out about a foot from the wall. No good for applying application tape and jobs like that but for applying vinyl to boards works quite well.

I had that very same idea on a unit that I was looking at. At least you can fold it away when you do vehicles in the workshop.

Glad someone else has a great mind!

Great idea, but I think you should have used a few more battens on the underside for strength. We have a similar idea in our workshop but since the day it was installed we have always had a pile of junk on it. 🙄 🙄 🙄

    Too true Mike
As you can see, it is accumulating stuff too. 😕
Once we have finished our extension to the computer room, it will all be tidy again 😉
