  • Sourcing an office printer with straight through paper path?

Posted by NeilFox on September 2, 2015 at 9:13 am

    Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a desktop colour laser printer that has a straight through paper feed path to allow heavier paper stock.

I know there are ‘presses’ that have this facility, however they have to be on contract with sometimes ludicrous click rates (been there).

All I need is a printer that can accommodate A4 up to 300gsm. This will allow me to print business cards.

If anyone knows of a printer that wont break the bank, please let me know.

    Thanks for reading the post.

    Kevin,

Thanks for that. I had the previous version but I did not use it enough to warrant the costs uncured.

I was looking to find a standalone colour A4. But they don’t seem to make one. HP made tones of them about 10 years ago but nothing like that now.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    Thanks guys for the comments.

I think I may have found something from Oki, the C610. I am going to check one out shortly to see if it fits the bill.

    Thanks again.

I have a magic touch oki C5600 laser, only does general office stuff now on compatible carts, must be 8yrs old and still going! I haven’t used it for garments in years but it’s a pretty reliable printer with the straight through.

    Hugh,

Thanks for the post. Your printer looks like the predecessor to the C610 / C710 series or similar.

OKI seem to be the only company now that does the straight through paper path.

We do a fair bit of small format digi work.

I assume you have a means to cut the stock down once printed?

Is the registration accurate on these desktop machines when duplexing? I would imagine you would need to manually duplex on one?

Ludicrous click rates, on older machines probably, we were paying 8p a colour print, upgraded to a newer machine and more than halved that. The lease on a low mileage refurbished machine, with some trick bits, plus the print commitment is less than what we paid for the print commitment on the old machine we owned.

Digital print prices have dropped, and we run some large jobs in house that we used to send out to litho printers… and it’s not just us doing this. Digital print is booming now.

    David,

Thanks for the comments. I had a press which I purchased in 2009. It was the going rate at the time, but as time went on, the click rate wa high by comparison the new contracts. The company would not renegotiate.

So I ended up out of the contract and just about giving the equipment away.

I don’t chase up or do any cut paper based digital print any longer, however I kept the card cutter and I have a laminator so I was thinking of printing my own business cards. However it is only a thought. That’s why I was looking at the C610.

I don’t want to get into another contract as I don’t have the work for a press.

    Thanks for the comments.

I don’t blame you, it’s a big commitment to say you’re going to do xxxx print’s a month, and make enough money to pay the lease.

We too have a laminator for the business cards, but in all honesty for what we save on business cards, we might as well sub it out to a trade printer 😉 😉

    David,

It is very much looking like that will be the best option for me.

I have enough printers generally, desktop and wide format. Adding another printer for a single task is looking less smart.

I will check around for trade printers.

    Thanks,

    Neil

Thanks all for the comments and views. I think it may be time to call a day to this thread as I have my mind made up on this subject.
