Posted by Marcella Ross on January 23, 2007 at 7:46 pm

    Me again ………….. more pc troubles……. 😳

I have installed windows xp sp2 and since I have lost sound. I have gone through the troubleshooter in device manager but still have come up with nothing. When I check in device manager it says the device is there and working properly. I have downloaded upgrades etc but to no avail. 🙁
There is no sound whatsoever now from the pc. I have even checked in the bios and it’s OK.

Also Signlab is playing up too 😕

Has SP2 got bugs??????? Problem is I can’t use media player 11 or internet explorer 7 without it…………

    any ideas?

More than likely unrelated to your Signlab woes.

Do you have a make & model for the PC?

    eg. HP / Acer etc.

The drivers are nearly always available on the manufacturers site.

At a push – a generic driver should probably get you up & running such as AC’97. (Realtec chip probably on your motherboard)

    just looking for one now…

ps. It’s actually quite common to lose drivers when you ‘update’ to SP2, especially if they were windows based (they dropped support for some items). SP2 isn’t really an ‘update’ – it’s really an upgrade – XP is basically re-installed.
After you’ve done the SP2 thing – go onto the ‘update’ site & take all you can get. original SP2 was still a bit ‘buggy’…

    Hi Marcella

You can try "update drivers" which should automatically install the correct driver, but first and sometimes missed is going to "advanced sound settings" and ensure the master volume is up and not on mute, sometimes it defaults to mute of off when upgraded to ensure it does not blow the speakers of your desk.

    Cheers

    Hi,

I tried ‘update drivers’ already. My motherboard which has the sound is a ASRock K8 VM800. I have downloaded and installed the K8 driver and upgrade but I still have no sound. I’ve tried the C-Media driver too.

Dave, that link you put up, well I found another K8 VM800 upgrade on there so I’ll try that first. thanks.

Download the AC’97 driver from above…it should be the full suit, it’s from the AUDIO CHIP manufacturer not just the M/board co.. And before running it – maybe uninstall your current audio drivers – shouldn’t make a difference…but never know.

🙁 no luck Dave ………….. still no sound at all.
I think a new sound card might be my next move.

Yeh, could be the on-board Audio is goosed if that didn’t do it.

That driver set will run 99% of on-board sound no bother.

Cheapo sound card – £6 or £7 from PC world.

    Was worth a try.

is the plug in the wrong socket?
Normally green plug into green hole
or plug to the furthest top socket on a plugin card…

    um… sound on Mute?

marcella, your not having a lot of luck with that PC just lately are you. have you tried looking in device manager to see if there are any conflicts?
Try uninstalling the sound drivers and then restarting the PC, it should then find your sound card/chip as new hardware and automatically instal the best driver you have on the PC.

What make and model is it you are using?

OK……….. I’m not daft!!!!! 😀 All the plugs are in the correct sockets, all speakers are on and turned up etc etc.
My sound was perfect until I installed SP2. There lies the problem.
I googled the problem last night and found loads of posts about the same thing, all with different ideas on how to ‘fix’ it. Tried quite a few but nothing so far has worked.

Martin, in the device manager, in the sound, video and game controllers section, my C-Media AC97 audio device is listed. When I click on it, it tells me it’s enabled and working properly. But, also in device manager there is something called ‘Other Devices’ this has 2 unknowns beside it with yellow triangles…….. when I click on them it has no information on them but asks if I want to reinstall the driver. When I do so it goes so far then says ‘unable to install because software is not there’. I don’t know what this is.
Now the other curious thing is when I go into ‘sounds and audio devices’ in the control panel (i.e. not through device manager) there is nothing there. It says there’s no device, there’s no sound recording or playback etc and nothing is highlighted so I cannot make any selections …
I have installed a few different sound drivers, including the one that worked until yesterday! They all install but do not give sound. (?)

There have been no changes to my pc except the installation of SP2. I would rather fix this if possible rather than uninstall SP2 as that means I lose all my drivers (I end up with no keyboard and mouse either!) and I think doing this already is what’s caused my Signlab problem, I’ve got no fonts or font manager!!!

re: The ‘other devices’. Uninstall them in device manager and re-start the PC. It will then attempt to find the driver devices…and let you know what they are in the process / update them.

Then at least you can see if it’s sound related or some redundant hardware (eg. onboard modem) that’s spitting up the errors.

what I’ve found is that apparently after installing SP2 the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator stops working…………..

I think I can safely assume this is my problem …………. but now I need to find out how to fix it. One suggestions was to edit the machine, inf file. We tried that last night, but it didn’t work either. 😕 So I’m searching to see what else I can find.

I found that last night Nick 😀 Unfortunately none of the advice there helped. But I have just bought a new sound card but before I put it in I’ve got one more thing to try.

    😀

ah.. i see… yes… drivers for motherboard and sound card. Other devices area means it hasn’t a clue what that bit of the computer is.

Surprised that SP2 did this to u..very surprised indeed.

I’ve ran Driver Detective (thanks for that link Martin) and updated all the out of date drivers. This hasn’t helped either 😕
Signlab is still playing up too ………… it gets to 50% of opening a file then it stops with an MFC error. This again has happened only since installing sp2.
I think I’ll go back to service pack 1. Tonight I’m going to start with a new harddrive and begin from scratch avoiding service pack 2. What a waste of time! 🙁

Sorry Marcella but with all the trouble you’ve had with your comp just recently,
don’t you think it’s about time you bought a new one or at least put some more logs in the back of yours. 🙂

sp2 is actually a good thing…. hmm. now you said u ran driver detective, i never use software like that…. a reinstall and then install all SP’s, then windows update till its all done, then start mucking about with drivers and signlabs, you should be up and running in no time.

There is nothing wrong with SP2, its just the way the computer gone funny, SP2 is a decent upgrade particularly as it has firewall features

  • Marcella Ross

    well I’m sorted! :cheer:

Nothing was working so there was only one answer ……… a new harddrive. New hard drive in and then I installed windows XP from a disc that I got with a laptop at christmas. (before I was downloading SP2 to update the SP1 that was originally put in this pc) The disc being SP2 and not just an upgrade from Microsoft.
Anyway all went perfectly well, including Signlab ………. but still no sound. So I put in the new sound card I’d bought yesterday and that worked a treat!
So I’m back to normal ……….. well kind of, just the basics in this at the mo, Signlab, Corel, Adobe and my emails!!! Oh, and some music! I can start filling it up with more of my junk as I go on!

thanks for all the advice, especially Martin who gave me tons of useful info! 😀

marcella, glad to hear you have got things sorted out at last, you were actually quite lucky getting your laptop recovery disc to run on your PC quite often OEM software won’t install on a different make of machine and sometimes even the model number makes a difference.
I would check in device manager that everything is OK as you may have drivers missing if you have not used the original discs.

exactly what I was thinking Martin, as long as the code was used from the main PC then you wont run into further trouble when you do windows update.

Dave recovery discs don’t normally ask for a product number so I would think Marcella has the laptop product key on the PC now, if microsoft pick it up she will be asked to validate her copy of XP and given the chance to enter a different product key, she can then enter the one off the side of the PC and things will be OK.

Hi Nick, yes the disc I used was xp service pack 2. The upgrade to SP1 which I was doing originally direct from the microsoft website was what was causing grief, but putting it in from scratch and not as an upgrade worked fine 😀

That’s good, I guess the restore disk worked cos it was a new hard drive so it did not have any thing on it to say stop?

yeah, I used my original windows serial number to activate it. It just seemed to be a problem when I was trying to use the microsoft website upgrade for my other disc.
