  • Solvent printer – fumes & working from home

Posted by Helen Butcher on November 24, 2011 at 11:08 am

    Hi
I need a solvent printer for the type of work I want to do but a salesman has suggested that as I work from home the fumes would be dangerous – even with eco inks. He suggests a latex printer – but I can’t afford one – I am hard-pushed for cash as it is.

Do any of you work from home or in a smallish unit? Are the fumes going to be a problem?

Hoping you can give me some realistic – non-biased viewpoints.

    Hi Helen

If you are printing 24/7 then yes you will need an extractor fan.

We have solvent printer, we print 2-3 hrs per day, yes you can smell it, but nothing an open door or window wouldn’t`t fix.

In our old place the printer room was alot smaller, we bought a unit from machine mart, we used it 6 times at the most, then never bothered.

Me thinks the sales rep was after selling you another printer LOL

I suspect the same as Denise.

I don’t run a printer but know plenty who do, both from home and from small workshops, one or two of them printing more than there are hours in most peoples working days!

just go with exctraction, a simple good quality Xplair type of thing will usually suffice, I used to use a fair amount of solvents in my old workshop when cleaning ali etc, without the fan on i’d be as high as a kite within 30 mins, with it on I’d barely notice it.

I’d have thought you’d be ok with eco solvent. More reps are pushing the Latex printers so I’d agree on the salesman trying to sell you one.

    Thank you all

Just as I suspected – a spin for a sale.

My chosen workroom has plenty of opening windows and the printer will be right next to one of them and if I feel it necessary I will add an extractor.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

If only more car wraps were like that – the world would be a much happier place.

    Luv it!!

I have a BN-20 and work from home, mainly in the evening due to a full time job. No issues with odours.

I ran my Eco Solvent Roland from home and was mostly OK, only if I printed off 5+ meters at solid ink coverage did it smell but otherwise no problems.

Tonight I just spilled about half a cup of cleaning solvent on my table and I’m a little high at the moment, cold in here now as I have doors and windows open with a fan going to try get the smell out *hair*
