    HI Alan,
    just wondering if you know….

whats the difference between ‘full package’ and upgrade ? i obviously use cdr12, so would rather go for the upgrade. is it just a download, or do i still get the full package, but cheaper ?
    cheers.

Upgrade is fine if your package is a full retail one. I would go for the boxed version because then you will get all fonts and new clipart, etc. Not for me to advertise but Amazon is a good start to compare.
This is not ‘in the shops’ yet late February is when it should be here but you can pre order I think although I’m sure you can download it as a trial.
Give me a ring if you want to talk through.

that’s a good point Alan, about full retail package, i have a feeling mine was the cheaper educational one. i was fed up with trial versions of things, and not having time to learn them before they stopped, so bought that as a longer term trial, i guess 3yrs is a fair trial!

i’ll order one next month then i think, the wallet is already taking a massive hammering at the mo!

cheers for the advice and offer of a chat about it. might well take yuo up on that nearer the time!

Hugh, when you do decide you may want to double check if you can upgrade from an educational package, the license does layout do’s and don’ts

I am expecting no upgrades from the educational as i understand it.

    Features I see

    Single line fonts
Two people working on same file
    Adobe colour management

The one I want to know is, is it multithreaded for Duo / Quad core processors?!

Am I eligible for Upgrade Pricing?

To purchase the upgrade version of this product, you must own a previous licensed version of:

    CorelDRAW Graphics Suite
    CorelDRAW (stand-alone)
    Corel PHOTO-PAINT
    Corel DESIGNER
    Micrografx Designer
    Micrografx Graphics Suite
    Micrografx / Corel Picture Publisher
Note: Upgrade eligibility excludes academic and Not For Resale (NFR) versions.

So what is the version limit? Corel 10 retail?

Not aware of a lower version limit but under 10 may need a call to customer services.
Don’t know about the multithreading do you want me ask the question?

My experience of Corel is that whether you can use an upgrade depends on whether someone will sell you it – and there’s always someone. I think it is the outer packaging that’s different not the CD/DVD.

I don’t know Peter, I’ve was never asked when I last bought an upgrade.
Every new version of every software seems to have another security measure installed, you could well be right but you would be infringing the license for sure (is it checked by anyone) or maybe you’ll get an error message on install, I don’t know.
Whatever your software if you use it daily, professionally for your business, it’s cheap compared to the return you’ll get. (When I say you I mean generally)

Unless like me you use 3d Studio max primarily for creating 3d Text 😕

I agree except I’d prefer to say "cost effective" rather than "cheap".

That means that I won’t upgrade any software until there are clear cost benefits available. Thus I have Signlab 5.6 for vinyl work – I can’t justify the thousands I would have to pay to upgrade all my copies.

So now I look forward to seeing if X4 is really worth the upgrade cost.

One thing is clear to me as Rob posted when he did the Corel compo, they have listened to Sign Makers in this new version and some of the things we have talked about here seems to be in X4 (single line engraving fonts, colour mamangement changes for example) and the corel site video shows a lot about signage for once.

Might seem a silly question, but amazon.com is listing the price for the full version at a cent under $400, any reason why you couldn’t buy from them? Obviously the exchange rate is great at the moment and would make that a better option. 😳

Because having a computer shop and account with a trade supplier for software, makes it £95 delivered. thats for the educational version, as thats all Britsoftware had in at the minute, but the Mrs is a teacher, and I will be using it at home for designing. (Amazon.co.uk has it at £115 + delivery)
If its worth the upgrade I will buy the full version next week
Costly trial but at least its a legal one.

Dont know if you got the wrong end of the stick there, but I was asking as a general question. I was thinking of getting a copy, but wondered if there were any issues with buying from the states rather than the UK site? Also, you can get hold of X3 at bargain basement prices as well. Sooo is X4 that much of an improvement on X3? I have been using 8 (dont laugh) up till now as it was only ever used for cutting, but it has now come to upgrade time! 😀

Ive been thinking about upgrading to X3, but now 4 has hit the shelves mmmmmm………….

Like the "WhatTheFont" feature, but will it work on vecrotised text (outlines) or just an unloaded font in a document??

Same boat as Hugh, been using a student license for a while on V12, however the last full version I bought was V3!!!!!

Maybe its time to take the plunge and upgrade, going to be expensive as Ill probably look at a new computer too :lol1:

Its ok I thought the question was directed at me, 😳
The only issue with the USA version may be similar to what I had with 3D studio max, I bought a copy from America for $700 which at the time as over £500 I was then told I couldnt register it anywhere in Europe only America.
So that may or may not be the case with Corel.
Its an expensive mistake to make.
Discreet told me I could buy 3DS max at the discounted price of £2990 instead of £3500 as a good will gesture.
    😕
A good will gesture would have been to reward honesty with a serial code.
Just dont want anyone to make the same mistake I did.

perhaps I’ll do some research before taking the plunge!! :lol1:

    cheers for the heads up!

never really understood registering software, devalues it for re-sale (if allowed lol)

usa and uk versions likely to be the same

Take a look at the unleash site at http://www.unleash.com or Amazon UK. X3 will look an amazing upgrade from V8, X4 just better and yes What the font will work on vector text, (just typed some in to check).
educational version now includes VBA (earlier versions didn’t) but no manuals.
The Unleash site is a good source for info regarding Corel products and http://www.coreldraw.com good for posting questions, it is frequented by some of the Corel guys as well as a host of other users.

Support & upgrades is a good reason for registering.

USA/UK versions "may" be the same, but discreet have proved otherwise with how my 3DStudio max turned out.

ah upgrades is a different thing

in fact when your dealing with Adobe, they register your software when you cant get the damn serial to activate.

3DS is a different beast, same with Autocad… Corel is not, all versions that I have seen, when you install corelx3 it doesn’t give you an option of English[UK], I think its English[US] so it isn’t localized for our country.. thats what I am thinking anyway. I am expecting the USA CD to be same… infact I should say Canadan CD tbh.

Only thing is then is import duty, postage which can be up to £40 with insurance (which you will want) depending on courier etc, I bet the £385 it sells for here is not much more when you add it all up, plus if you have to return it for any reason its not practical.
So for me I would choose the UK version over an import.

Also 110 volt software may not work on your PC as the UK version of corel is 240 volts.

I dont think import duty applies to software, only vat

Well, I had to pay £110 on that copy of studio max before the postman would give it to me.
I had to hand over £110 in cash else he said he had to take it back.
So I guess it must do, there wasnt any VAT taken by customs though.. 😕

    i guess it wasn’t sent as a gift….
amazon i think does offer you to gift it if ordered from them

Thats true, if it is sent as "a gift of no commercial value" its fine, providing they dont open it and see its the industry standard software for 3D animation and game design.:lol1:
Same with Corel draw though, it may be easier to say that is a gift as It could well be I guess.

It is £38 also the threshold for no import duty as Lisa gets a lot of "littlest pet shop" toys for our daughter from the US, and always makes sure its under or marked as gift. (easy with toys eh)

I have had the same thing when importing stuff by courier, you will find that at least £30-40 will be an import handling fee for the agent used by the shipping company…………
