    hi guys and girls,

you may or may not have seen a few of my posts saying that i was getting a uniform cadet 540.

i now have the printer and its all been set up by Andy Malcolm. he did an amazing job getting everything cleaned up and running right. test prints came out great.

anyway, im a noob when it comes to the software side of things as i have always just fitted graphics never cut/print them myself. andy showed me the basics on printing, how to send them to versaworks and some of the settings but he didnt have chance to show me how to cut as i didnt have the correct software.

i have downloaded a signlab 9.1 10 day trial but not really sure what im doing tbh, i managed to make a cut line on some text i typed, but letters where a bit jagged when cut (not sure if down to me/software/cutter)

the only software for cutting i ever used was silhouette studio for a small cameo i used to make small low number graphics and stencils. i have a coule hundred images drawn up in this software for graphics i sell that i would like to keep using, is there any way i can import these to versaworks or into signlab etc to get a cut line?

any general help to get me started would be greatly appreciated! 🙂
oh and sorry for the long post!

    quick reply…

Signlab is a great sign making software, the best in my opinion.
we use it for all our cut vinyl work and have done about 15 years i think.

printing from it i dont know as we use Photoshop and rip software for our Roland machines. so cant help on that side of things or give my honest views.

i am sure signlab have video tutorials covering an array of different tasks. ide recommend trying to locate those as it will get you off in the right direction.

you can also purchase signlab in modules. rather than the full package.
so you buy the aspects of the software you require.
maybe give brian hays and impact graphic solutions a call as he can best advise and will give you a good deal too,

well ive bought signlab 9.1 should be hear towards the end of the week 🙂

im using the trial for now and im trying to trace around an image, the image has a white square background that i need to get rid of as it just traces the square. i watched a tutorial that showed me how to use gimp to remove the background, did this and thought it had worked. but then when you trace it again it still traces the box around the image!

    and ideas?

A bitmap image will always have a bounding box around it, gimp won’t have removed it just changed it to a transparency. once you have traced or vectorised the image you can then either ungroup or break apart the image, select the box on it’s own & delete it.
Sorry don’t use signlab so not sure exactly how it works.
