• Small Network

Posted by Iain Gordon on August 10, 2005 at 11:38 am

    hi gang,

I’m after some advise for setting up a small network. I would like to get my Main (internet) computer, laptop and workshop (garage) computer all talking to each other and sharing files.

The main comp is hard connected to internet through a wireless router to the cable modem. laptop has wireless connection to internet as does the comp in the garage.

I have tried using the various wizards that come with xp but nothing seems to work. I keep getting messages that state i have no access to network, and to contact administrator.

Have been at it a couple of hours now and have just suceeded in confusing myself.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction.

    Thanks
    Iain

It sounds like you have a wireless access point instead of a adsl router

We had this problem a while ago and tried everything to get it to work including getting three network professionals to look at it.

In the end they concluded we had been missold an access point.

When we changed it, it started working straight away

    Can you give more details.

Operating System on all the machines?
    Which Router?
    Is File sharing enabled?
    Firewall software?

Have you set permissions to share your hard drives?
You have to right click on the hard drives in explorer and set them to be shared , that error is normally cos they are NOT set to be shared (and modified) by default.

Looks like Paul might be right.

The description of the router thingy is:

    802.11g/802.11b Wireless access point
    Broadband Internet Access
    4-port Switching hub

I take it from this that i dont have the correct piece of kit.
I am running xp pro on the main comp and xp home on the others
I did try the file sharing option but that didnt resolve anything.

Because i work from home i tend to do a lot of the designing inside and only go into the workshop to do the cutting and manufacture of the signs. What i am trying to do is to be able to send completed designs etc to the comp in the workshop. i have been using floppy discs etc but it makes things a bit complicated when designs get altered.

    Any advise?

This is a difficult problem to solve without physically seeing your setup or knowing how far you`ve gone with the setup already.

A wireless router should be connected directly to your cable modem where it acts as a DHCP server and all your pcs and laptops are assigned an IP address from the router.

Once you`re sure all your PC`s network cards are installed properly, connect only 1 pc. Run the network setup wizard and be sure to check the box that says “This machine connects to the internet via another pc”.

If that all goes well, your pc and router should be able to “talk” to each other. Once thats established, you need to configure your router for e-mail and access etc. How to do this should be documented in your router`s user manual. The usual way to do this is to type /192.168.0.1 in your internet browser window of the single pc you connect.

Once thats done, connect the next pc and configure the router to accept the “Mac” address of that one….then connect the nect pc etc.

I know this explanation isn`t as technical as it could be but it`ll give you a rough idea of what you need to do.

I have a 4 pc network setup here and home and a 12 pc set up at work all done this way.

    Cheers

    Rod

This takes you to a configuration menu for your router where you set up your access and security.

    Rod,

my router is connected to my modem and my main pc is hard connected to the router.Internet and e-mail are fine….

The other two are already connected (via wireless) and internet and e-mail are fine….

This leads me to believe that the connections are fine…

I am trying to share files between the computers and this is where i am having problems…..i have tried to run the network wizards but this is where it is falling down..

I’m not very technically minded as far as comps are concerned but would try to sort it before having to call someone in

    Cheers

Are all PC`s properly named m8?.

Right click on “My Computer” and then choose properties.

Click the “Computer name” and you`ll see some details.

Make sure all the pc`s are on the same network name. “MSHOME” or “NETWORK”.

If not, then click on the Netwrok ID tag and go through the renaming wizard so they are all on the same network.

If you still get the same problem, try temporarily disbaling your firewalls.

Another thing to try is to click Start>run>cmd and type /ipconfig all

This will give you the ip and mac addresses of the pc you are on, you can then go to another pc on the netwrok and try to ping it by doing…

Start>run>cmd then typing /ping 192.168.0.x (x being the ip address).

If you get a response in milliseconds, theres nothing wrong with the network and you`ll need to start looking at share permissions on each pc.

This is why i always set up my networls as i described in my previous post. If all pc`s have a server to assign IP`s, they work so much better rather than having simple peer to peer.

Trick is to set them up 1 at a time m8.

    Easier to troubleshoot.

Pity you weren`t closer. A cup of coffee is all i would charge to sort it out.

    Iain

I had a similar problem last night setting up a new PC on my network. After about a hour, and going through many options, it finally came on line.

I disabled the firewall and this seemed to allow me access, but of course you need it back on if you are going on the internet. Basically the firewall I had installed on the PC was not allowing network talk. Once I realised this I changed the relevant settings.

The problem when you get a situation like this is you change everything to try to get it working. Do as Rod says, and take it step by step (tip: write down any changes to passwords, computer names etc. you soon lose track!).

I don’t think you are a million miles away from me – pm me if you need any more help.

Sorted at last..went thru everything that Rod suggested and still didnt work

However moving the network into the “trusted”side of the firewall sorted it.
It seemed that was the problem all the time as nothing else has changed.

How can 1’s and 0’s be so complicated

Many thanks for all your advise

    Iain (happy again) 😀
