Posted by Marcella Ross on November 26, 2006 at 9:35 pm

I’ve asked this before but can’t find the thread 🙁
I’ve lost sound from the media player (windows or winamp). I’ve got sound on my pc as my email alerts etc all make sound no problem. BUT I can’t play any music. Everything is silent 😮 and it’s driving me mad! 👿
It’s happened before and it cleared when i ran Avanced WindowsCare and it seemed to sort the problem ………….. but thats not the case this time 😥

PLEASE HELP I HATE THE SILENCE, I NEED MY MUSIC!!!!!!!!

Marcella — is it when you try to play .mp3s and .wma files since you are saying through windows media player and winamp. I have had this problem before where the computer forgets the proper codec to use and it doesn’t play anything. Usually a restart fixes this. Heres how to check to see if you have a problem with a codec since your sound seems isolated to these two programs.

    Hi Marcella,
If you chat on yahoo, and you have muted the sound in whatever room you are in, then you wont be able to hear your media player, go back into yahoo and unmute or turn up the volume and that will sort it. Not sure if this will cure the problem

    Farted? 😕 :lol1: :lol1:

probably wrong… but have you double cloicked the small speaker on the lower right of your screen to make sure none of the options are on mute?

No Rob, I’ve not farted! :lol1:
Checked all the sound settings, nothing is on mute everything is set at high. I can hear all clicks and email alerts it’s only when I try an mp3 or wma file.
George, I’m away to try that link to see what I can find out, thanks! 😀

    :no1: ….. no luck George! 🙁
I’ve restarted twice ……….. that was my first port of call. I downloaded Sherlock the Codec program thingy ………….. (?) It just listed all the codecs but it didn’t seem to tell me any of them were broken ………….. or perhaps I’m too thick to know the difference 😕
Weird thing is that earlier this evening it was all working fine. Then I switched from one track to another and ……… nothing but silence….. just like that. So I tried several different mp3 files etc and none would play. The media player is showing that it’s playing the track but no sound.

    bl00dy infuriating …………. I’m missing my music 😥

BUT ………. windows media player still won’t play, only Winamp? 😕
Never mind, at least I have sound again. I’ve got some Aerosmith blasting out right now, just to wake me up! 😛

    Hi Marcella,

    1. Go Start >> Control Panel >> Sounds and Audio Devices.
    2. Look around for anything that seems out-of-place.
    3. In particular, click the Audio tab and confirm that the correct devices are being used for playback.

Quite likely, you will need to reboot Windows (i.e., refresh the system) for your changes to take effect. Keep it simple, do the changes you think are appropriate, and then reboot.

    Hope that helps,

    Rod

thanks Rod. I had checked all those in the first instance, the correct devices are in place and all settings seem correct. Nothing is on mute either.
    It’s really strange one.

Never mind at least Winamp is working!
