  • Signgeer bench, and corner rounder alternative.

Just moved into a bigger unit and splashed out on a new bench. The 2440 x 1220 bench from signgeer. When it arrived I found the bench to much smaller than this, and when I called they said it’s a bench frame to "take" a sheet that size.
Baring in mind the cost of it I was surprised at this. I also had to buy my own mdf bench top, again I assumed it was in the price (my own mistake for not reading it properly)
I also paid an extra £50 to have caster wheels on the bench, when built the wheels don’t actually sit under the upright leg so as soon as I went to move the bench, snap… 3 wheels broken off. Marking my brand new epoxy resin floor.
Then I have to lift the bench to move it, and ripped the mdf clean off as they only provided 6 screws. Surely they can afford to send a whole box of screws for a few £.

Next is the corner rounder, useful for putting a nice finish on sign boards.
It’s small, made of plastic and tin. Signgeer just stuck they’re own sticker over the original manufacturers, not a major crime but makes me wonder…
Total cost of £160 plus vat and I imagine it to have been worth around £50 so that’s going back to them.

What benches do you guys use, and where did you get them from?
And if anyone knows of a decent quality corner rounder I’d be interested in that too.

Sorry for the rant, I’ve just been looking forward to getting all this kit and getting going properly for so long, and I feel really let down. Feels like I’ve been stung by them although they are happy to take it back. Just disappointing isn’t it!

Why not build your own bench? There are full instructions here:-

I made my own bench from used scaffold boards.
It has castor wheels and measures 3m x 4 feet x 1m high.
It has an MDF top which I have covered in 6mm coreflute, which is quite good for cutting on.
It is not very pretty but it is very rigid and stable, and flat.
You can have it for a tenner – you just have to come and collect it from West Sussex.
    Here is a pic.
    Email me if you’re interested.

I’ve just recently moved into a larger unit and decided to make a bench for myself. It’s 3m long by 1.8m wide. I made the mistake of not bracing the middle of the longer length while constructing it, but I can soon sort that out. Lockable castors at both ends means I can move it if I need to. Probably the cheapest option.
But some people are not comfortable ‘making’ stuff, although I imagine most people on this forum can turn their hands to pretty much anything (or know someone who can).
If you do construct it yourself, I would suggest you spend a little bit extra to make sure all of the wood you use is planed square and cut by a local carpenter to ensure everything is all the same length (legs, sides, ends etc). This will make getting the whole thing square/level much easier to achieve.

If not, you can buy a relatively cheap, but sturdy workbench. I bought the orange and blue bench at my last place. I was pretty restricted to space, but I still got a 2440 x 1220 MDF board on it as a work top. It’s not exactly flat, but I’m going to buy a piece of toughened glass and put the cutting mat on top of that to level it out.

I haven’t used Signgeer for a while but they always seemed to be pretty good when it comes to returns. A lot of their goods are imported from the States or exclusive to them which is why they can sometimes seem a bit pricey.

The corner rounder prices are relative to the dies they use so a decent one won’t be cheap.

The Signgeer CR1 is a good entry level rounder (if a little lightweight and not much good for anything over 1/2" radius in Dibond) but is great to keep on the van as they’re so compact. The dies are also great quality and self sharpening. Once you’ve outgrown the CR1 you could invest in the more robust (and more expensive) CR2 as the dies are interchangeable between both units.

I think your rant is unjustified.
You have slated signgeer when at the same time admitting you never checked the sizes before ordering,
You say you had to buy a top because it wasnt included – not signgeers fault,
then you complained about the number of screws they sent.

I know I didn’t check the description correctly which I accept is my fault.
However I feel they misled me with the title of the workbench on the site. And haven’t supplied the bench with enough fixings or a table top, when I paid £300 for a bench I don’t expect to get a flat pack frame that’s smaller than advertised.
They have been reasonable with me, however as I said I do feel I have paid well over the odds for what seems a very cheap and wobbly bench!
When spending good money and waiting so long to order I was excited, so when it’s broken after one day it’s a bit of a disappointment.

At the risk of pouring petrol on this little fire, I have to agree with Ewan. The signgeer advert is very clear about what’s in the box. We learn by our mistakes mate, I’d just take it on the chin but I bet you pay attention next time.

Well, just to add my two pence worth, I have bought two of the Signgeer bench frames, I spoke with them before hand, to determine the sheet size I could work to (8×4) I put my own adjustable feet on one and height adjustable heavy duty casters on the other, with some heavy duty threaded bar. Both solid and fit my space well
I have been happy with them as I didn’t have the time or inclination to go making my own, added a sheet of MDF and then covered with polypropylene sheet as the cutting mat.

All I was saying was the title of the listing is deceiving, I have said twice now I hadn’t read the description properly.
My own mistake, but none the less still disappointing…
