  • Signextra – thoughts?

Posted by Robert Lambie on September 16, 2005 at 9:31 pm

as many will have noticed by now, uksb has created a new section to our site called signextra.
signextra wil cover all industry news and should be veiwed on as our sort of very own online sign mag…
at present we are working on yet another new section along with updating existing. as we do this i thought it would be good if you could maybe use this thread to give me feed back about what is good and more importantly bad about sign extra. all comments are taken on board and i do keep them in mind when developing the site. anyway… if something is bad i ant to make it good, if i cant, it go’s…

any veiws, thoughts, ideas on signextra please, i would really appreciate it…

oh and if you say something and you think your still right… hammer me with another post, then another till i listen. i need a kick up the bumber-leery sometimes…. 😉 :lol1:

Iv read Signextra from top to bottom and i think its Very good, nothing in there that i didnt find interesting and it was all a good read, compared to the Signworld magazine which i like but there was only 4/5 pages that got my attention to read the full article (adverts etc) Signextra gets the thumbs up 😛

thank you alan. comments much appreciated.
i spoke with a member recently, they said they liked signextra but is what it is, online sign mag, once read you probably wont read again unless something in particular. to be honest i knew that but still happy to go with it… it will, in time, be a hell of a read for many, keeps our members news from dropping into the back pages of the uksb and at the same time gives us updates on what is new…

im sure there is room for much improvement too…
ide like to hear if anyone thinks this or has any suggestions to add too…

I thought it was good to have a place to have news, but I feel that this section needs to be open to the public (without registration) and forum closed (need registration to see it), kinda swap the roles, most other printing industry websites have news free and forum closed until register.

Also, it is good but again I feel too much is on your shoulders. Moderation, Adminstraton are covered but what about Editorial and other positions should really be opened up for people to step into those shoes (unless they are)

Good to see that Suppliers have some way of promoting theirselves as it is lacking here with advertising banned, suppliers need somewhere where they can show off their wares.

    My 3 cents today.

Yep I thought it was fab too ….. nice bit of reading …. and hooray no adverts unlike most of the mags!! …. Couldnt believe just how many pages were taken up by ads in signworld last month …. 😮 I think if you removed the ads pages it would have been a bit thin …. no offence meant to Colin and the crew of course …. just saying!! Its a bit of a pian that big advert (the company who sells machines they literally have their own brochure about 6 or more pages in there) 😮 thats always in the middle of all the good stuff/articles?? Anyway as I said sorry Signworld … not picking holes just giving my opinion 😀

Signextra gets thumbs up from me :thumbup2:

I think it is a great read too.

Not something that you’d keep looking at tho, until new articles are added.

When articles are added, are we going to be notified? or are they going to be done every week/month etc? at the same time each week/month?

Just a thought. I keep checking if there is anyrhing new anyway.

I think it should be open to anyone too, not just those who register.

    Just my 2c

i am gonna reply to all, but read last post first, shanes…
yes shane, there will be home page notification very soon. its another modifiaction we have to make to the site, but worthwhile i think.
basically the top “news” section in the middle of uksb homepage will be 2 side by side, not 1…. all signextra posts will appear on uksb homepage right at top of list with a mirror on signextra so the uksb homepage keeps you bang upto date with signextra.

we guess signextra will be updated every month, sooner if i have time. saying taht… maybe 2 stories a week when i get going so ultimately 4 maybe 8 new stories per month.

as for reading it without being registered…. well to be honest i dont mind who reads it. but one thing for sure, only the people like you shane, carrie. john singh and god knows how many others keep/make this site what it is today. registration is 100% free… so no real excuse… i just want those who help the boards get something back. signextra is free for us to abuse… outsiders that dont want to participate, can remain outsiders…

that said… it is my comments just there that really bug me in running a webiste like this… where are the days when we could “all” could access profiles, info and more… 😕

yes it was a nice suprise when back of hols but like Shane says is it weekly? monthly? or random I think unless it’s added to or updated and it is only open to registered members how will it progress 🙄 and like several others have said NO AD’s sorry I don’t normally shout 😳

Thanks Rob, fair point too. Registery is not an issue when you look at it that way.

It needs to have a reason for people to keep going back to it. Consequently it needs to be updated constantly or people will read it once then never look at it again. ( Bear in mind that people keep reading the signboards because they are constantly evolving).

Unfortunately, Signextra is static so I think is read only once. Perhaps if it was interactive and comments could be added to each article then people may revisit to read the updates.

Alternatively the material needs to be changed regularly (but this would be a lot of work to keep writing new material) so the readership needs to be encouraged to submit articles.

What i personally would like to see more is Suppliers on there, ie Vinyl suppliers coral, avery, mactac,Machine suppliers and there latest products and software etc, i know the suppliers are resticted to what they can say about themselves in the other forum threads ie self promotion but in sign extra if there was a thread to all/some seperate suppliers we could put questions directly to them in that way its not self promotion as it would be in there thread, this sort of information would be invaluble (spelling lol ) to newcomers to the trade like myself. :lol1:
