  • Vinyl Shortages, what are your thoughts on this escalating problem?

What does everyone think about the wrap vinyl situation?

We have three vans to do next week.
I checked the vinyl situation with Spandex on Friday. They had 140 metres of the chosen colour in stock.
Finalized the artwork with the customer on Monday arvo and they had sold out!

If anyone knows where I can get my hands on 40 metres of Avery Supreme, Gloss Metallic, Dark Blue, I would be eternally grateful.

Spandex are saying that it won’t be available now until at least October.

Have you tried William Smith or Pyramid Display?

@GrahamScanlan , can you advise, mate?

Had similar situation with an accident repair job, needed 2m of Oracal 970 Cardinal Red.

Found a supplier (ATC Rochdale) who had 4m in stock so snapped it up. The same customer has a few new vans in the pipelines, so will need to look at alternatives we can’t be waiting 9 months for stock, to do the job.

Obviously, material shortages are a global issue in all industries at the moment. But we all really should be preparing for the possibility of extreme shortages or a complete stop on certain products. Add steep price increases to that and some companies will end up on their arse!

Amongst others, Cast has been drying up steadily, it is the same if not worse with some lines of reflective vinyl. This isn’t good but we can get by, by shopping around suppliers and jumping from one brand to another, but what happens when the likes of “Ink” runs short? Most printers have dedicated ink types and even if you can source third party types, bang goes your warranty and along comes the issues of hastily switching inks, like profiling, head clog and more. Just one more big can of worms to open up on us as we try to run our businesses.

The old saying “survival of the fittest” comes to mind, but I think it will be more the case of “survival of the smartest”.

Or those who have the ££££’s to buy in stock to keep hold of. Trouble is most smaller companies don’t have the capital, or storage space, and it’s a bit of gamble unless you’ve contract work.

There’s also the fact that with NI contributions increasing in April, inflation, utility costs, there’s going to be less cash to spend on luxuries, and people will be looking to save where they can, personally and in business.

I didn’t foresee the Ukraine situation, but when all the grants, and BBL’s were handed out, the lifting of lockdown was never going to bring the world back to normal overnight. If anything we’re probably going to find it harder.

We’ve had problems getting hold of Oralite reflective. Got nearly 400m which we ordered before Christmas. Delivery date keeps slipping.

    Hi Tim,

As Rob mentioned, we all need to find away to work around the situation, I’ve been on leave last week but will check Pyramid’s stock tomorrow for you, I’m telling my customers if they have guaranteed work to ensure they order enough material in advance and then put more on back order. I know of a very large customer who prints most of their wrap colours on their Latex printers to get around the problem. With the Russian and Ukrain conflict things may get worse before it gets better

@DavidHammond I totally agree mate, it’s very difficult keeping the balls in the air with things as they are, never mind having to increase your spending. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t!
I first mentioned this around July 2021 due to hearing this and that via the grape-vine, was buying in a minimum of an extra roll of digital and laminate each month and sticking it in storage. more if you can afford it… not only are you slowly creating a cushion for unforseen circumsntancies but your also buying at the current rate, rather than the inflated ones along to road.
Even if you only accumulate a couple of rolls in stock when you cannot get hold of materials. it might be enough to keep you operating until you can get some.

Cast vinyl and Reflective appear to be the worst hit at the moment but i am also seeing coloured vinyls starting to dry up too.

Miraculously, the order arrived yesterday when I had a day off. It was from one of Vink’s companies.

Hi Jamie I also ordered and had delivery yesterday, had invoice arrive this morning and nearly fell off my chair, price had gone from £6.35 pm for 610mm to £16.97!!!!! out of interest how much given its a Vink company did you pay?. Ive called accounts and they are looking into it but at that price they can have it back if its not repriced.

I bought the last four rolls of 3M 180 wrap vinyl in New Zealand yesterday. They are saying it could be months..it seems 3M are having supply issues of their own and cant make the stuff. The next lot are going to be +30% or so.

    Hoarding? Yup. Sorry.

I do not really see me needing a reflective or wrap vinyl any time soon because i have used very little of it in the time i have been making signs. but reading this is making me concerned that normal everyday digital vinyl could also dry up. do you think this is possible?

I ordered some Metamark the other week and the air release was out of stock, but no issues with the standard colour. They advised a week or two delay.

I’ve not experienced any other issues with standard vinyl, hopefully the fact it is quicker, easier and cheaper to make compared to cast should help.

I’m from across the pond in Canada.

For a little while, there was a shortage of premask, but when the stock arrived, we stocked up.

We also stocked up on Gerber Foils and basic Black, white, red and Dk Grey in 2mil and 3mil. Those are the ones we use the most of. We keep two spares of Roland Ecosol of the 6 colours plus Cleaning Cartridges. Vinyls for the printer a couple of rolls each of Matte White, Gloss White and Clear. For substrates. Usually at lease a dozen of Non Glare clear acrylic 2mm and 3mm, ACP and Coroplast. So we are good to go as long as we have power.

If the power fails, I’ll get out the lettering quills and One Shot enamel. 🙂

As far as you folks in the UK. It would be an idea to use this forum to buy and sell at least small quantities among yourselves like Tim has done here. It might merit a separate forum. We all have colours in stock that we seldom use, and it might be a way to move some to those that need it.

    Cheers,

I was discussing the vinyl shortages yesterday with a large manufacturer and the shortage of resin is the reason behind the problem. And more price increases are on their way maybe mid summer. A quick internet search pulled this up.

    Resin

Though resin producers have recovered from weather-generated shutdowns and planned plant turnarounds, demand remains strong, and prices continue to settle or increase slightly. Supply issues remain, so expect to see continued force majeures and sales allocation through 2022. Some inventories are beginning to grow, but additive shortages continue to impact availability. Overall, prices have bottomed out, but price increases will continue due to logistics and staffing issues and energy cost increases.
