• Sign UK Anyone?

Posted by fluidedge on March 9, 2003 at 9:16 pm

Anyone making plans to attend Sign UK this may? If a few of the board were planning to attend the same day I’m sure we could have a council of war in the coffee bar then ‘persuade’ a few exhibitors into extra discounts!

Graphtec for one would probably be willing to offer something special on the day for UKSignboard members, now that they are selling plotters and Flexi direct.

I’m sure that Robert could twist a few other arms as well so that we all get the most out of the trip to the NEC.

    good idea mate..
i will be attending, what day though, i dont know yet!

i had planned in actualy having a booth at the show. somthing nice but not big.. nothing more than to promote the group & have some coffee or beer for you guys to stop in for a laugh at a bit of opinion swapping.. this wont be happening though. not for any other reason than the way i have started to change how the group will grow in ways. no, wrong.. just the approach i will take in trying to make it grow.
when i am down though ill be handing out leaflets and hitting the car parks hard with them… 😆

im actualy down london area this weekend.. heathrow and thurrock. i also have two more down south the following week or fortnight..
so bolt up your doors, & turn the lights out! ill be lurking… 😮
you will turn to pick up your coffee and your new graphtec cutter will be away.. the only thing left… a tartan calling card! 😉

We will certainly be reviewing our security arrangements.

Being married to a Port Glasgow girl I know for a fact that no self-respecting kilt-swirler would dare travel up the M6 and NOT stop off to wreak havoc in their mecca for all things depraved that is Blackpool.

Help, we’re still recovering from the last Glasgow weekend!

i remember going there one weekend only to wake up cold at about 4am
in a tram shelter. i couldnt find my mates and forgot what hotel we booked into. i walked from the pleasure beach to way up by the tower. then turned and walked back.. did this until 10am when my mates drove by me waving..
haw yoo! yah dafty.. ware did yae git tae? they shouted..
i was moved by how worried they sounded… and jumped into the car with the pair of them still laughing..
i was shattered…. i looked in the mirror and saw two, 2 inch fungus green lines running from my eye brow to my jaw line… 😮 obviously those wooden damp benches made the marks.. what got me was the amount of people i walked by up and down that beach staring at me…

    arrgghh 😡 😡

anyway enough about my youth.. 😆 😆

Perhaps meet up for a coffee – sounds great 😀 😀

We’ll all have the Sign UK badge but heh!………
What if we all wore a special badge that identified us as belonging to a special signgroup community

Don’t you think that would scare the hell out of them 😆 😆 😆 😆

We have the badges in stock, all thats needed is the insert designing – then everyone can have one ready for the show!

Insert size is 70.5mm x 45mm (portrait or landscape). Get designing and post in the file swapping area.

Going back to Sign UK 1991, a few of us on the exhibitors stands got together and formed the ‘Associated Representatives of Signmaking Equipment’ group. Quite a select membership, employees of Spandex, APS, Granthams, Roland, Graphtec, APA, Grafityp etc. You can imagine what the badge read…, think I still have one somewhere.

We’d meet up at every show thereafter, get *.*.*.*.holed, and vote for the *.*.*.*. of the year.

Think we should be able to recognise one another since most of us have a mugshot posted 😮 😮

What I think might be a good idea is if we did have some badge or I.D. to indicate we all belong to an online community. 😀 😀

I can perhaps understand that Rob would be a little apprehensive about this, in case he felt we wanted to use part of his named site 😕 😕 .. but I’m sure there could be another way around this

    What say you Rob?

Rob can design the badge, I’ll send him however many he needs already printed – then he can dish them out by post!

Guys i’m all for it. Honestly I do not mind. Badges sound great! Ill have a wee think on the design.
Any publicity is good publicity they say. I think so too.
But, (hear comes my moan) my only concern is this, & it is already happening around the country. Not from any regular here I may add…

Some people are coming to the site, seeing what its about and leaving. Fair enough… but what i’m getting is a small flow of reps calling me to ask some questions on a sign company. A sign company I have never heard of 🙁 .. They say… hi rob just thought ide give you a call about your group and buying from our company. I say yeh!…… & then nothing. They say, yeh…… and then nothing. The rep then says aren’t you enquiring about group purchasing with our company. I chuckle and say no, sorry…
It just so happens some individuals have had a rep call in on them or they call a company for vinyl and say they are part of the UKSG & expect large discounts, but in fact they may only have registered on the boards and in most cases not even done that!

This doesn’t bother me to the point I know they cant get anyplace with it as the supplier calls me first anyway & wouldn’t grant the group discount negotiated through a member. What bothers me is it may start bothering them, the suppliers… every time someone mentions the group its. Oh no not another so called member. 😮

Anyway, I know none of us regulars need to stoop this low. Just thought ide give in my daily groan… 😆 😆 sorry…

    Richard! Are you serious?
Can you imagine all us standing all over your prints and crowding your stand… only to hear a loud creak and then a crack… and the whole stand collapses round us 😆 😆

    Hi Rob

Read about the suppliers problem. Would it be possible to give suppliers you have done a deal with, acess to a members forum which lists a limited profile which only they can acess

As I see were your coming from and this could turn in to a messy situation and needs some sort of control

Well, maybe I could sponsor the bar area, ‘The Raccon Bar’.

Regarding the buying group, do you issue membership cards or numbers?

Could you have an area on the site where suppliers can check members details?

Talking about suppliers etc, could you contact me again about advertising on your site.

    Cheers

    hi joffrey
i see we have somone else that travels as much as bob gilliland to get to sign venues. well done mate, would be good to catch you there if you can make it mate. 😉

richard, bob, i agree it would be much easier to just have an open forum of some sort to see whos who in the group. but im not sure at this moment how to make that possible. we have a discussion board amongst other UKSG forums were ill post anything i think maybe of interest to the group & vice versa. but its also a place i can keep things discussed under wraps..
i remember a very large supplier giving me the run around. wanted to back the group in anyway they could etc.. the director calls me and says can you pop me through an e-mail telling me everyone thats in the group so i can give this a good think before commiting myself!!!
nice one i thought… “yeh right” then you contact everyone yourself and try come up with somthing yourself…
suppliers will always offer you good deals when things are slow for them..
its down to you giving the product a go.. breaking the ice from the norm..
in most cases after about 3 months the prices start to creep thier way back to normal…

im just in my own drivvel way trying to say i dont trust suppliers.. 😮

this is not pointing at you richard.. different type of supplier all together in my eyes even if you are a trade supplier your product is completly different. no offence meant mate 😉

    hi rob

Iwas thinkiing thatn you just may be able to give the suppliers thier own
forum which only suppliers have acess and contained thier in could be a list of uksb full members that would be entitled to the discounts they offer
and this was a way for them to see at a clance who was eligible.

    only a thought.

Why give suppliers the upper hand about who is who and how big we are etc. I think it would all go back to the usual state of how big you are and therefore how big the discount is.

We are a buying group collectively, why not post a pin number on a weekly or monthly basis to all members and this account gets price abc. That way we all get the same treatment, respect and they, the suppliers treat us as the biggest buying group we are. They will work harder to please a large group than they will to please 60 or so single companies?

That in my opinion keeps us in control of the suppliers and they will play our games.

    Just a thought anyway.

I can see where Bob coming from
We’re talking about the scantiest, limited info possible
Its only there to help the supplier recognise the person in question is a bona-fide member and nothing more. No other details should be available
