  • Sign Mounting Channel Question

Posted by Paul Humble on December 22, 2008 at 10:27 am

Does anyone know a supplier of the sign channels that are used for mounting signs onto posts? Also are these just attached with VHB tape? The sign is going to be 3mm Ally Composite measuring 7 foot by 3 foot.

    Cheers

    Cherwell or smp
I would rivet and use vhb, problem is with composite there is not a lot of material left if you countersink. I would go for ally for a large post sign, and if time permits get in from ashby or similar. they use cs rivets and powder coat or flood coat so they are not visible on the face The cost is usually similar to using composite but a stronger job.

    Hi Paul,

Rightons do channel rail don’t know the price off hand.

3mm ali composite board is fine VHB tape is more than enough

We do 4M x 2M signs this way never had a problem.

Scuff down with matting cloth before applying tape though, gives the tape

    something to bite onto.

aalco and Blackburn metals both do sign channel.
if you are only using VHB tape, make sure you follow the procedure by the book. if you can get away with it put a rivet at the end and start of each length of Chanel, just as a precaution.

we use 4-5inches of VHB tape behind every rivet on composite board. not the white 3M vhb tape but the 3M grey lesser grade stuff. we actually do this when backing aluminum with channel but started doing it years ago when composite came about because an 8×4 sign once came down. on inspection i found that the 3mm composite had came away from the channel. the rivets had tore through the face of the composite in the high winds. (remote location) so we got in the habit of backing each rivet with VHB tape to spread the fixing area. (hope that makes sense)

Ashby got back to me but I think they were a little expensive (I may be wrong, it was the only quote I got today). I need to ring Alutrade back tomorrow but ill also get a price from Blackburns.

    Cheers as ever guys
