    Good Day Everyone,

    Bit of advice required please.

I have 2 trays to fit, on these in the centre is to be a seperate oval shape with lettering on.

The oval will be standing off the fascia with led’s on the rear to produce halo lighting.

my problem is what to make the oval from as It will need to have a lip around the edge to protest the led’s. the size of the oval is approx 1200 x 650.
Naturally a composite would be ideal in terms of weight/fitting etc, but never seen an oval with an edge on it ?.

Could be done in ally I guess but probably to heavy and pricey.

Has anyone done a similar thing if so what was the shape made from?

    Any suggestions much appreciated

    Martin

    Hi Martin

I have never done it before but I’m sure these can be attached to the back and are waterproof, I’m sure there must be a system in a clear tube to protect it from water, then it could be simply attached to the rear.

Give them a call and ask.

    sorry not much help.

    cheers

    Martin,

I think that you might be able to form a narrow strip of 3mm dibond to follow the edge of an oval that size, without folds appearing.

To start with glue a some small pieces of extruded aluminium right angle to the back of the oval 3mm in from the edge, Penloc adhesive works very well on that material. Glue and clamp the strip to each bracket, in turn, so that you finish up at the top of the panel to avoid the join being seen. Run a bead of silicon around the inside to make the joint waterproof

Will this be enough to keep the weather out? To do that, really the back would need to be boxed in completely.

    Hiya Martin,
I would make it from GRP, easy for me to say with my background but there are plenty of grp moulding shops around the country. Advantages are fully weatherproof, colour can be added during manufacture so can’t chip off & very light weight. Against it is the fact that it needs a mould to form it but it would be easy to make a temp one.

    Hi martin

I would try signs direct europe, used them once for the first time recently really good service for the product, although I had a few problems with the admin but they put that right and thats all you can ask of anyone.

Had a tour of the factory, in Margate and they manufacture in all sorts of materials well worth a call.

    Thanks guys,

I did think of GRP Steve, the off the shelf ones all have fancy mouldings though so new mould would be needed as you say.

Might try your idea Steve of the strip of Dibond just worried about the edge.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

    Cheers Martin

    Martin,

If you use a 2-part adhesive like penloc beware dimpling on the front of di-bond created with the chemical reaction, depending of it’s noticeable or not of course 😮
