Sign channel fixing
Posted by Robert Scullion on April 13, 2006 at 7:02 amI have a sign to make up and attach to 2 poles, di bond with sign channel and clips on rear. I dont want to rivet the channel on and some of you guys have mentioned vhb tape. Where can I get the vhb tape ? preferably local, Glasgow area, any help appreciated.
Bob
PS are some better than others or just some makes more expensive ?

we tend to use the acrylic foam tape at £20 per roll rather than vhb at £80, most important thing to do is make sure it is applied in warm conditions and score the surface of the dibond and channel with cross hatching marks so you get a good adhesion. if it is going high up and are large panels we still rivit for good measure and then paint out the rivits – we find appliance white touchup paint a perfect match for white dibond and just buy litre pots of the other colurs mixed to their respectve ral colour

There are many tapes out there.
I buy 3m VHB from Cherwell sign supplies at £58.00 roll, this is suitable for most VHB applications. Tel: 01280 840297 usual next day delivery.

As Martin says it’s important to apply tape correctly.

A bit off the mark but what about countersinking the panel and use c/sink rivets?
Just a thought. As ive never used this tape before. I have visions of flying signs!! Although many people on here speak highly of it.

we use lots of it, 3M stuff… there are a few variations on the vhb tapes, grey being cheapest sorta all rounder, then the best being the white 3M vhb.
if a sign was to be large and no rivets ide only use the white VHB but most our stuff goes out with the grey stuff coupled by rivet’s. these signs could go out peppered in rivet’s for all the customer cares but i find that dibond and the like is too soft a material for rivet’s alone on large signs. strong winds can tear a rivet through the face of dibond if the wind is hitting it from behind constant. we couple the rivet’s with a few inches of VHB to spread the fastening area and reduce the possibility of the material tearing the rivet through the face.
that said, we do the same with aluminium etc but just as a belt and braces type thing.as has been said, it is imperative that the proper application of this stuff is used.
