not quite mine, but have a close association with it and am first in the queue to buy! Converted into a mini cinema complete with plasma screen, sofa, stocked fridge and candlelight for couples to watch short films on the theme of ‘lurve!’ 😀 😀

lol, i very nearly bought a 65 dodge a100 camper, very similar to the one attached, but in mint con’d, it’s as close to a scooby van as you’ll get !!

had several plymouth cuda’s and a number of dodge’s over the years, broke alot more for parts too !

love the 67 camaro shape though, if i’d been forced to guessi was ready to say it was a 68 camaro ! not bad eh !

It’s called a "Nova" Rob. Designed and produced by Richard Oakes in the early 1970’s and later manufactured by other companies up until the early 1990’s.

It’s VW Beetle based (uses VW engine floorpan and running gear).

The first one I built was in 1983/4 took about 18 months to complete in my spare time.

I recently became interested in building one again after writing a book all about the car

Pete your so right there, they are money pits, you can get a good one just as easily as a bad one. A mate of mine was selling a split window Californian import which had no interior and would need a complete bare metal respray, his asking price was…………………..

    wait for it……………………..

    £23000.00 😮

Needless to say it didn’t sell.

A van is only worth what you are prepared to pay for it.

Another ex member of our club had a mint Bay window that he sold for 10k after sinking 20k into its restoration. If I had had the cash it would be on my drive now.

    Ha Ha,

Haven’t been able to reply for a few days now, but when I looked back at this post it made me laugh quite a bit, funny to hear all your comments.

I like the gate comment Dave, yeah we are nearly local mate, have to pop in if i’m ever up that way.

Gotta admit though. VW’s aren’t really my thing. My mate/lodger is into them in a big way, and he spotted this one for me in Texas, so we imported it and got it on the road. Just an investment opportunity really. I’ve got to admit though, I’m having lots of fun driving around though, specially down here.

Can’t make it to vanfest this weekend though unfortunately, got a gig to do at a wedding.

Anyway cheers all for the amusing comments. :lol1: :lol1:

    I love this thread.

Got no photos handy of my kombis, but when I started out on my own I had an 1800cc Microbus, my dad drove a 2000cc Microbus, my drive car was a 1970 beetle (curved screen) with a blue printed motor, leather interior painted Monza Red, and I had a ’63 beetle lowered etc to refurbish, and a 1600cc kombi ute i was going to ‘do up’ as a work vehicle.

Ran out of money to do the refurbs (things got a bit tough work wise) so I sold sold the ’70 and ’63 Beetles and the ute to keep my head above water.

The 2000cc van died on a delivery not long after, and the mechanic offered to buy it as is for $3000, as I couldn’t afford the expense of a new motor at the time. He spend about $7000 refurbishing it, and still sold it for about $12000 to the local automobile club (RACQ) and it now travels the country teaching high school kids safe driving skills.

I was pulled over in the street and offered $4000 cash on the spot for my 1800cc bus, by a bloke who wanted to buy it for his son who was a doctor, and collected VW’s. Last I heard he spent about $5000 on the thing and presented it to his son as a gift.

Before these vehicles, I learned to drive in a 2000cc dual cab kombi pickup, and I had 2 VW Golfs after that when I got my license. Dad had Passats, and Audo Fox, and an Audi 5E at the time too. Before that my parents had a rare Tear drop kombi ute as a work vehicle, and a 2000cc campervan that we toured australia for 3 months in 1975.

Now, after a small sojurn with other vehicles, I back to The VW fold with my drive car being the New VW Turbo Diesel Caddy 7 seater.

    I love my VW’s.

As far as anyone not understanding why, I think that they are always seen as an honest vehicle. The aircooled units were a unique shape and sound. I’m not particularily fussed on the new bettle, and the new kombi is growing on me, but both are way too expensive to buy, especially when the old ones were such an economical purchase in their hey day.

My dad was selling VW kombi’s when they had a price increase from $990 to $1050. The sales staff considered going on strike because they feared no one would want to pay over a $1000 for a van. He’s 70 years old now, and often reflects on those times. Especially when I went out and paid over $47000 for my last van, because I couldn’t justify $55000 for the new V6 kombi van at the time. Poor bloke almost had a coronary when I told him the prices. :lol1:

I’d buy a kombi camper tomorrow if I could find a decent one. I miss those VW carnivals. The last one I went on with the ’70 beetle, just the line of beetles nose to tail went over 2klm’s. Then the kombis after that… awesome… 😛

This was a beetle at one time!
My misses is allowed to drive it sometimes!!

Porsche 356 speedster kit on 1600.

    Light & fast.

It was built on the Channel 4 program ‘Dream Machines’ & a guy from scotland won it at the end of the show.

Being a biker, he didn’t even get to drive it.
I bought it from him, 500 delivery miles on the clock, & drove it home all the way from Stonehaven tohere in Co.down.

    Great day that was.

Roy you guys NEVER, calculate the true cost of the build, sound like good profit, now be honest, how many HOURS have you sunk into it for 2.9K profit?

    Peter

you are right Peter ( as usual! )……however there is the pleasure aspect in this……I am sure Roy did not put this amount of work in simply to make a turn on it…..otherwise it would have simply been a quick botch job….he has enjoyed doing it.and for that reason would not take the quick profit…..there are far worse ways to spend your free time!

I would be more than happy to have that as my works van…..like I said a head turner for all the right reasons.

    John,
I know worse ways, believe me, some guys spend all their time building train sets!

each to his own, I do acknowledge good workmanship, though, whatever form it takes.

this is the thing with the vw thing. in the summer we pack up the van on a friday afternoon and then were gone for the weekend, camping in devon and cornwall is something that you all should experience once in your lifetime…trust me !!

so, the time and money invested is for me and not profit, however, it is good to know if you needed to sell it you wouldn’t be out of pocket !! we do use the campers regularly…so money and time well spent

Nice job Roy.. van looks great!

must get off my backside and sort out my ’95 caravelle, or sell it 🙂

out of curiousity how many VW’s do you have?
it’s not uncommon to own more than one…or is that an Irish thing?

here’s what I have at the moment:

    1957 based GP Buggy
    1971 Bay Window Bus (crossover)
    1973 Baja Bug
    1973 RAT Beach Buggy
    1974 1300cc Beetle
    1995 T5 Caravelle (like yours)
and 2 chassis’ for more buggies
also storing a cal look beetle for my mate in the garage too 🙂

then there’s the van for work 😳 its a nissan primastar
and my better half, Lynn has her ’06 Passat TDi

actually reading that back is scary, maybe i need to start attending some meetings to help me…;)

    Nice Brian…

I just showed your post to Alison to prove to her that I was not eccentric after all..

She in response has just asked me to ask you are any of them F***ing moving? (her words not mine :-?)

The reason she asks is because I’ve got a 1969 based VW beetle kit Car Called a Nova, as well as a 2nd complete set of bodypanels for a second Nova lying in the back garden, and a 1986 Capri – None of which go 😳

Are the Nova’s the ones where the whole canopy lifts up Phill?

    That’s right Paul.
This is the one I had many years ago (1985) – This one did go 😕

:lol1: the nova is a lovely car, a couple of mates have them..

to answer the question alison asked,
1957 based GP Buggy – its in pieces, body being repainted soon so it will be on the road in the new year…

1971 Bay Window Bus (crossover) took it apart to repaint also, sitting in primer at present..
forgot to mention we also have a 2nd one of these bought last week in california as a donor for panels needed to finish the bus here 🙂

1973 Baja Bug – running and driven most days

1973 RAT Beach Buggy – running, but i want to swap it onto a rebuilt chassis when i have time..

1974 1300cc Beetle – running like new, only one registered owner on the logbook..

1995 T5 Caravelle (like yours) running and used regularly

and 2 chassis’ for more buggies – both stripped down, one rebuilt.

my friends cal look beetle – driven most days by him

so in the overall scheme of things its not so bad!

I wonder how i missed this thread. Perhaps i should pay more attention. 😳

Anyways, i bought this last June (2007) and finished the restoration almost a year to the day i bought it.

Wanted it for the kids for weekends and overnight stays for a bit of fun.

    It now looks likes this….

Seems Phil is right, it must be a sign makers thing. 🙂

The whole restoration can be looked at here : http://www.vwscotclub.co.uk/forum/forum … p?TID=4143

The Jury is still out mate 🙂

We went way over budget (which seems the norm) and i`ve learned that what little patience i had has totally gone. 🙂

Restoration threads also make it look easy when in fact, the reality of restoring these things is much different.

    Rod, brilliant job mate.

My dad took us all around australia in 1975 in a brand new kombi popup camper.

Literally picked it up from the dealer, and headed off for the trip of a lifetime.

I was only a teenager then, but I’ve got lots of fond memories of those days sleeping in the top bed.

Dad sold it about 3 years later. and got $500 less than he paid for it new. It was the cheapest holiday you could have… never missed a beat.

Restorations are always money pits from experience… never goes to plan…. ever 😕
