  • should i buy a graphtec or a summa?

Hi i have been offered a Graphtec CE5000 120 for £2495 + vat and a summa 120 for around the same price.
I am told the CE5000 has more limitations as to the materials it can cut and the summa has 3 years warranty (1 more than the graphtec).

I’m sorry to be a nuisance but does anybody have any advice for me, which is the better machine. I can compare their specs but i would like some advice from people with real experience.

Also is anything dodgy going on with summa like are they going out of business as i heard they were in a little trouble financially. Maybe just a rumor but who knows.

    Many thanks

You could almost toss a coin, both are very good machines. Graphtec has cutting Master as a utility to Corel and the like, it is feature rich but slow and clonky in Corel but apparently very good in Illustrator – Summa has Winplot which is fast and easy in Corel but has less features ie no auto weld but obviously this can be done in Draw directly. As for financial stability of the company I have heard nothing. Summa is in Belgium and support is good from them and you can get hold of Graphtec from the UK and I can vouch for their support as being very good.

    Both have virtually bombproof reliability.

Used a Graphtec for years – it was over 15 when it needed a total overhaul.

I ran an FC5300? about 5 years ago – again – lovely machine.

i presently have a Summa D120 at work – no where near as ‘fancy looking’ as a Graphtec, but it’s performed amazingly from day one…and every day since then.

Either way…you’ll be glad you did.

Very similar and both good machines (we use both Summa and Graphtec albeit higher end models) with little to choose between them.

If you are thinking of the D120 then build quality will be very similar but this will sound more rattly and less substantial than the graphtec.

A few points that would favour the Graphtec for us are:

Our FC7000 is significantly quieter than our Summa S class which in our small office environment makes a big difference to telephone conversations etc.

Graphtec support is UK based and very helpful

Optical eye is superior at recognising red based marks (only really useful if running a gerber edge)

Hope this helps a difficult decision!

    Regards

Hi Liam, i bought a Summa D140 about a year ago now and have been happy with it since. Although i also had a graphtec before.. and are good machines. Never had a problem with either 🙂 Message to Colin, could you private message your email to me please 🙂

    Thanks

Thanks to you all for taking time to respond.

It’s good to hear that both machines are solid options.

I am leaning towards the graphtec for some reason. But still have to make sure i don’t want to buy a printer/cutter just yet.

    Thanks again

    Liam
