I thought I would show you some of the signs I have put up “today”.
The signs shown below are for a pub that requested glass fascias with a gold leaf lettering on the rear. (Some may remember I asked advice on the leaf work a few weeks ago). I took advice from the many talented traditional artists within this site and went back to my customer with prices.
My advice was that I could make whatever my customer wanted (well try), but!
The rear leaf effect on glass was going to cost him & turnaround time would also be at least double.
Not only this, the pub was situated in a particularly rough area and could easily be subjected to stone throwing etc…
In the end, he went for the cheaper, quicker method. This was gloss black rynabond, with metalic gold vinyl lettering and a “gold” mirror polyester film applied on top of the gold vinyl. The finish was close to what he wanted and he was over the moon with the price and the results…
    The pictures are shown below…

Hi Rob, long time no speak! been absolutly manic here.

Signs look great, it’s a nice effect that I’ve never tried. What make of gold polyester did you use ? I always thought it only lasted 6-12months outdoors ??

EDIT: That last one makes the black finish look quite textured – is that really just plain black Reynobond or was it painted black on white ?

OK… who is the eagle eye guy from creative? :lol1: :lol1:
your right mate.. the sign which i never mentioned was an existing signs) i ttok it down, rubbed it down and spray painted. "forgot t9o metion that one" 😳 :lol1:
anyways mate… your right about the foil, but using foil on vinyl does extend the polyesters life considerably!

this is some back posts i did on the same subject, hope they help! 😉
oh yeh… glad you are busy as hell mate. im upto my neck in it myself! 😮 :lol1:

above… is a picture i took this evening on my way home from work.
i did this about 5-6 years ago now…

i used brown perspex for the backing. then i contour cut the the word sharelles by jigsaw out of the same colour of perspex. i raised this section on locator studs.
the raised section had a solid panel of white laid down first. this was to create the white outline for the gold, once applied. it was also to create the vinyl backing to give better adhesion to the mirror vinyl.
i cant remember exactly who i bought the mirror from. but i would imagine it to be amari/mactac as i used them for almost everything for a great number of years.
once the white was applied. we then applied the GOLD mirror film.

the sign is still in perfect condition today as you can see, but as you can see the gold has lost the yellow/gold effect a bit… but still holds the mirror finish very well indeed.

when i did this job i told them the mirror may need changing every 2 years.. they didnt mind, as this was the effect they wanted and already paid extra for the brown perspex.
glad to say.. i have never been asked to return to replace the mirror text…

all this praise for the vinyl? just remember the sign doesnt get washed every other day like a van does. or exposed to the thrashing they take on the road everyday…. 😉

Ok fair points Rob, I’ll have to give it a go some day on an outdoor sign and see how it holds up. I normally use the avery polyester films because they’re really nice and thin and easy to cut on the plotter unlike some of the other brands around.

I need to be busy to earn the cash to afford my new motor which I just ordered this week – off topic – sorry but I’m all excited like when I was a kid at christmas time :breakdance:

    what do you think ?

the film used on the signs above was “aslan” cost about £12 a metre from scotmark in scotland. i couldnt get the gold mirror from oracal in the width i wanted, “1230 wide” nor could i get it from amari “mactac” on time. a good friend of mine at scot mark, “andy beverage” managed to get me the aslan stuff next day. the cost was a bit more, but i got it fast and it was a decent enough foil for cutting and applying. seemed a bit thicker than the usual foils on the go, which helped prevent tearing.
the foil used on the older sign “sharelles” was “i think” mactac.

fingers crossed the foil holds up like the one for sharelles has
i start the 4th pub for this customer in about a weeks time. not sure what he is looking for this time.

Luv them all but the third one looks great
Yu’ve managed to capture a little of the traditional look that the guy was obviously after when he said he wanted glass with gilding

I have Avery Silver gloss polyester here but it doesn’t hold up using on vehicles in our climate.

Have a mirror silver here from 3M that has an outside guarantee of 6 years.

Have also recieved this morning a roll from R tape called Coburn 5 year outdoor metalised vinyl easy to cut and print on, and availble in silver, gold and brushed aluminium. its product number was 3101 Smooth Silver

    http://www.rtape.com

    Nice job Rob! 🙂
