We would lay vinyl first then jigsaw (trying to match the vinyl to the shape can be tricky, to stop scatching either completely cover with application tape or put some loop velcro on feet of jigsaw..(works a treat)
The edges we would use black permanent marker pen.

Hi Gray

Just a thought but you could try using one of the blades for cutting kitchen work surfaces. The ones that have the teeth face the other direction so the cut is on the down stroke of the jigsaw, this may help alleviate any problem of the edge of vinyl being lifted by the blade.

You should of cause leave the application tape on for the pad of the jigsaw to ride on, so as not to mark the surface of the vinyl.

3 bits of good advice there gray..

i too use app tape over face of vinyl but in most cases if i can.. i put a small outline around the whole peice, leaving it unweeded & also still with app tape applied.
i then jigsaw. once finished i strip app tape and then the small vinyl outline border that i applied. you will be left with this small but neat white outline all around the whole job. the fact that its there, insures no dog-earing of the vinyl or grit getting caught under the vinyl by the jigsaw blade…

Probably missing something obvious here, & I havn’t done much of this sort of work, but on the few i have done, I have sacrificed a few metres of cheap vinyl by cutting the design, using a jigsaw as you suggested, then removing the “template” vinyl & recovering it. Gets around all the problems of the vinyl getting marked.

Maybe I’m just too enthusiastic about throwing vinyl in the bin 🙄 🙄 🙄

a tip use Bosch A0 jig saw blades for cutting no spelshing of the face very fine cut they are excellent

quick tip….cover the bottom surface of the jigsaw with masking tape so that it doesnt scratch the surface of the material you are cutting or buy some PTFE stick on tape from a tool supplier like axminster tools for a permanent complete non marking method of using a jigsaw.

I like Robs solution – cut an extra outline, leave the application tape on – then remove the application tape and extra outline after cutting out the shape.

Hi Gray I think everyone has coverd the jigging out side but the fomex edges might be long term problem if you want them black.

I have recently used anew product made by Bret Martin ( they make Forex ) its 10 mm thick and made from recycled material and is has a black cour with a 1mm white face we use it for builders site boards it stops the edges picking up the dirt and looking a mess, If you can get hold of it it might be a permenent edge solution.

Hi Gray im shure the edges would be fine painted i supose my line of thought was you could have avoided the job with a Black cored Foamalux this is the product I was thinking of not Forex but as you said this may not be available from your local distributers.
