here is a particularly bad sign made from exterior mdf. 😕
the customer wasnt prepaired to pay much, but wanted a new and improved version of her sign.
the spec was… i want it to “look like the old one” but more modern and “pink”… other than chuck a grenaide at it, i was stuck. not forgetting the price had to be low… normaly we wouldnt bother getting involved but the owner is a freind of a freind sorta thing so we wanted to do what we could. heres the result… backing board is alu-colour flood coated in pink oracal 751 cast with router cutter letters, flash in 10mm foamex raised on locators.

    Nice one Rob, funky.

I do that sometimes; make a stand-off logo and mount it on the panel. It makes it look much more expensive! 😉

Why do hairdressers always have so much crap cluttering up their windows?

Nice work Robert!! HUGE improvement over the old one. I hate to admit it, but I like the pink on it too. Really eye catching and well suited for the business.

Such a show-off Mr. Lambie! That is one hell of a flood coat! I think I spotted one little bubble, oops never mind, spot on my damn monitor!

Foamex is that the same as Sintra, Komatex (foam pvc board)? Know there was a discussion about it some where.

Can you give us an idea of the cost to produce it?

HaHaHa I like the pink as well… 😀

questions Rob….what are the 2 colors of pink you used?
are they high gloss?? seem to be very shiny
and how did you fasten the burst onto the panel so you can’t see the fasteners? and for that matter — how did you install it cleanly also? I don’t see how you got a flat panel onto the wall without seeing the fasteners…is this a pan (returns)

    in any event
    great improvement Rob

Great job Rob. My only concern would be the 10mm foamex warping in the heat.

Did a very similar job here a year or two back, and the damn raised foamex thing started to sag after the first summer. Fortunately the client moved before I had to replace it. 😳

What sort of standoff did you use. I usually put a 10mm strip (or two) of foamex at the back with d/s tape then d/s tape it to the substrate. Be interested in your method tho.

Love the pink too. Not my fav color but very girly for a salon.

Isn’t holistic referring to ‘back to nature or a no artifical colours and flavours sort of thing?’ Sort of like a greenies view of hygiene… only the barest use of chemicals ( as in perfume in the case of the greenie…. 🙄 )

Lovely job Rob, like Shane I would be interested to know what the star bits will do in the summer heat, but you know all about foamboards weeknesses.

Can I ask, do you normally leave the edges unpainted(on the star) or is that ‘cos of the budget?

When foad coating these aluminium composite panels, I have great trouble doing the full sheets with no bubbles, yet the foamboard is easy peasy. I know why, but do you have any tips to get the Rob Lamie finish?

    Cheers

    Dave

quick reply, just for now…. flood coating was done by andrew ritchie (vectorwise) i did the flood on the star, by the time i got into work yesterday morning andrew had already flood coated the panels. 😀
we dont really do anything different flood coating foamex, perspex, dibond etc… each have their level of being difficult but same method used on all.
the star burst isnt that big, its 10mm foamex cut in the star form, pinned in a good few places with plastic locator studs on the rear. due to the size, shape and how it is fastened i doubt there will be any noticable movement/swelling. so i was happy enough to use the foamex in this instance. the main reason i used it was to give the flash a bit of depth, as with the word “Blaste” like i said, it was a cheep and cheerful sign so i went with the foamex.
dave i never painted the edges as i actually wanted the white to show mate. again, just shows depth and ties in with the text on the face.
the vinyl is all gloss, oracal 751 cast bubble gum pink, with cyrise and rose pink used for the large word “blaste”…
the fixings are poor, i hate screwing through the face but had no option. they have been drilled counter sunk then a little circle of pink placed over the screw head.

    Cos their hairdressers Andy 😕

I kind of like the pink Rob, fits in with the whole hairdresser thing.

Also for some reason everything I wash goes pink so I’m used to it 😀

Take it you don’t like it Marcella.

It is horrendous, the raised panel is something else.

    Nice job there Rob,
I’d love to know what you charge for something like that????

I know what you mean about fixings through the face …it’s my pet peeve about the sign biz, and I cringe when I see a beautiful sign fixed with screws straight through the face , but like you say sometimes you don’t have a choice.
    Cheers
