sheeting a wall with ACM panels
Posted by Martin Pearson on January 31, 2017 at 1:47 pmBeen asked to do a job which involves covering an internal brick wall with aluminium composite panels, probably about 30 feet in length & just under 8 foot in height. Anyone that has done this sort of thing before got any tips or advice about the best way to go about it ?
The panels will just have cut vinyl graphics on them, solid colour from ground up for first 3 feet & then text & various logos above that.Simon Worrall replied 7 years, 2 months ago 6 Members · 12 Replies -

From an ex joinery point of view, my concern would be making sure the wall is straight and the panels can be fixed making them solid. ie, not flex if someone leant against them. I would imagine the whole wall will need to be strapped with timber battens and packed out where necessary. if your sheets are 2440 x 1220 i would strap the walls at 400mm centres with dwangs (noggins if your English) at 600mm centres floor to ceiling. You could probably get away with using 2" x 1" for strapping.
The sheets can then be screwed to the timber -
Ewan, that was kind of what I was thinking, have actually already drawn up a timber frame so I could work ouit how much I would need lol
It shouldn’t get leaned on but I wouldn’t count on that 😆 😆
Was actually hoping to avoid having to screw the panels to the timber as I would rather have a clean face to the panels, other thing I seem to be having a problem locating is the H section joining strips for the panels that will fit 3mm board.
Oh I am English by the way but I have lived in Scotland for over 40 years 😆 😆 😆

Probably something like no nails or sticks like sh*t would do the job

Thanks for that Ewan, funny enough sign suppliers wasn’t somewhere I had looked for them, found loads of suppliers for thicker wall board for bathrooms & kitchens & lots of companies that wanted to sell me a million of them 😆 😆
What about VHB tape? Would that work or do you think there may be problems with it bonding to the wooden battens ?
-
Yeah i don’t think it would stick. Other option would be counter sink screw strips of acm on to the wood then you could use vhb. probably slightly over engineered though but would certainly work……
Or, use 10mm foamboard cut into 2" strips as your strapping? will need a lot of fixngs though to take the bounce out of them…

Here is a project we did for a massive bowling alley rebrand. We cladded the walls in 12mm plywood then screwed dibond sheets to the face. These were screwed counter sunk and then filled will 2 PAC filler between joins and screw heads, all sanded flat ( there was a total of six of these walls)
In total we used about 144 sheets of 8 x 4 dibond sheets then applied a WW300 vinyl across the face of the dibond.
A massive project with a team of fitters working for about 2 weeks and massive price tag too.

A tad bigger than my 8 sheets with cad cut vinyl then James 😆 😆 😆

Same principal mate!

Out of curiosity James, why did you apply composite ontop of the MDF, then vinyl?
Why not apply the WW300 over the MDF?
-
It was plywood Dave! They wanted to cover up an old metal gridded system with the plywood then apply the dibond and have the vinyl on top.

Do you leave any gap between the dibond sheets when you do this kind of job?
I have experienced in the past and issue, the boards expanded next day and they were bowing out.
Or do you use certain dibond?Thank you

I would suggest multiple sign trays fitted closely together for this.
I know that group 101 make them – I ordered a few from James today!
