Our civil liberties are constantly being eroded in Britain.

The latest piece of legislation which should really concern us all is the issue of fixed penalty fines for low level offences

    http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/news-may12-n … l-offences

"Fixed penalty notices for low-level offences come into force on Wednesday 6 June. Police officers will have the power to issue fines of either £40 or £80 to first time offenders covering a range of offences. It is expected that new powers will result in 1,500 fewer people going to court each year"

The reality is that these new powers mean the police are now fining people for "offences" that would previously never gone to court. In many cases extremely trivial "offences" are being pounced on and individuals fined for absurd reasons.

Seriously – this means you can now be fined for walking home from the pub as it is an offence to be drunk in public. And I wouldn’t be surprised if you could now be fined by the police for "looking at them in a funny and suspicous manner" 😕

Joking aside – you heard it here first!

I have an idea that simply "being drunk in a public place" would not be grounds for a fine, behaviour would surely have something to do with it and, who diecides hat ‘drunk’ is? I can be over the DD limit with around 2 pints of guiness but, I’m by no means drunk (not until the 3rd anyway!)

On the face of it, I like the principle, especially if it means people are instantly fined for dropping litter, allowing their dog to foul and general anti social behaviour!

That’s the problem Hugh – the police are now in a position of being judge and jury. They alone decide whether or not to impose the fine. You can of course go to court (and call their bluff) instead but you risk an even bigger fine by doing so. It’s an extension of powers that began with the ability to impose on the spot fines for parking and driving offences. There is now nothing to stop a policeman from issuing you with a fine if he suspects you to be doing something that is likely to cause a breach of the peace.

A very dangerous piece of legislation has slipped through here.
